I swear hundreds of years in the future historians will start the chapter The Western World: 2000-2030 this way.

A culture of young people raised in middle and upper middle-class affluence without any real challenges or hardships decided to destroy civilized society out of pure boredom with ever increasingly inane ways to make themselves seem more interesting than they really were.

    1. Unlike soibois, even barbarian raiders understand the need to have someone on hand with an understanding of the three R’s. Someone’s got to compile a Domesday Book and make sure the proper amount of tribute is collected.

      1. I know Alfred the Great required his officers to be literate — don’t know if that idea stuck around, or if Billy the Bastard had the same policy.

        1. Probably not. In the middle ages it was common for the aristocracy to be illiterate; writing was done by minions, typically monks (which is how “clerk” got to mean a person who does your writing, as opposed to the original meaning of “cleric” meaning monk or priest).

  1. The old Spengler Cycle at work, and we’re well on our way into the whole “soft men make hard times” part.
