How to identify an opposing force:

Direct a few rounds of small arms fire in the direction of the opposing force.

If they respond with a single volley of precisely aimed rifle fire they’re British.

If they respond with a a two minute fusillade of high cyclic rate machine gun fire they’re Germans.

If they respond with a hundred round ripple fired barrage of 120mm rockets they’re Russians.

If they unleash a thousand man human wave attack on your position they’re Chinese.

If they retreat they’re French.

If they surrender they’re Italians.

If, after five minutes of dead silence, your entire position is obliterated by a massive airstrike they’re Americans.

Semi-retired like Vito Corleone before the heart attack. Consiglieri to J.Kb and AWA. I lived in a Gun Control Paradise: It sucked and got people killed. I do believe that Freedom scares the political elites.

  1. If the A-10s are already in the air and patrolling close it could be far less than 5 minutes.

  2. Stephen Ambrose quoted several German WWII veterans who said that, in fighting Americans, they learned “how a rich man fights a war.” They claimed the Soviets would mount infantry charges through artillery barrages, but the Americans used artillery instead of infantry whenever they could. The Germans highly approved, saying it’s always better to spend money than lives if you can afford to.
Incidentally, the Confederates said the same thing about the Union Army. There’s something to be said for having money.
