This appeared in my Facebook feed and I made a double take:

You have to be kidding me!

I was caught between going with a facepalm meme or a Forest Whitaker twitchy eye meme. In the end, I had to go with Boondock Saints.

ow can anybody thinks these walking jokes must be taken seriously is beyond me. Then again I am not an expert on Stupidology.

  1. “American Association of Suicidology” Would that be a how to organization?

  2. I don’t know about that. I am arguing with someone on Quora right now that is dead set that firearms basically cause suicide. They even linked a ton of papers to support their position. I have not had time to go over them all yet and issue a rebuttal, but the link for the curious is here:

Point is I can see this as a real push from their side, as they seem to have it as a serious talking point within their ranks.

    1. Any rational person can see that they don’t *cause* suicide, or else there would be mass suicides by gun owners. What they do help cause are more successful suicides — no question about that, IMO. They’re the means to an end (no pun intended), not the cause of the end.

      1. It’s not clear they even do that. I’ve read (probably in “Stopping Power” by Neil Schulman, an excellent book available online) that the suicide rate in Canada did not change when guns were significantly restricted. What changed was the method used.

      2. They are one of the more effective methods yes, but surprisingly guns are slightly less effective than trains and building jumps from higher than 5 or 6 stories (If i remember correctly the numbers are 96%, 97% and 99% respectively, but don’t quote me on that). Considering suicide methods are highly cultural I would wonder what the U.S. would settle on in the absence of guns. Anecdotally I would say trains, but that is probably because my town is a minor train hub for the region so the numbers skew that way. I have no idea what the rest of the nation would choose.

    2. Which is patently untrue- Japan has the highest suicide rate in the world, and the strictest gun laws in the world.
