Between equals, respect is earned. In an adult/child relationship, especially teacher/student, respect should be mandated in one direction, and given only when merited in the other.
I don’t think it is respectful to indulge a child in their groomed fantasy that they are a different gender. I don’t think it is respectful to let a dug addict shoot up with free needles in a safe injection site. It doesn’t show someone respect to lie to them and allow them to engage in self destructive behavior.
Preferred pronouns is not respect.
It is control.
