So President Donald Trump Tweeted some right wing propaganda about misbehaving Muslims in Britain.
The British, in what is becoming a common idea of no platforming are reconsidering a state visit by Trump, while the Prime Minister criticized Trump on Twitter.
Trump fired back at the British PM sending this message.
.@Theresa_May, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 30, 2017
Of course everybody is offended. Stephen Colbert went on TV to apologize to the PM and beg for America to come back, because he yearns to be a subject rather than a free citizen.
Then: Plot to blow up Theresa May is foiled: Suicide bombers armed with knives planned to murder the Prime Minister in Downing Street, claims MI5.
Excelling fucking timing Muhammad. Well done.
The most infuriating thing about Trump on shit like that is that he’s right. He’s a rude, loudmouth, asshole, but he’s right. Now the PM has egg on her face. Watch as media coverage on this vanishes like a fart in the wind.
Whenever I see a headline like, “Islamist suicide plot to assassinate Prime Minister Theresa May foiled” (from Drudge at Sky News), I think “the Islamist suicide plot to assassinate Theresa May that you know of“
The “right wing propaganda” was YouTube videos made by Muslims of Muslims rejecting the society that’s given them shelter and committing or threatening violence. Amazingly, the strongest “debunking” of any of the videos was that one shows a second-generation immigrant Muslim attacking a kid on crutches, rather than a foreign-born Muslim.
The truth isn’t always nice.
The media descriptions of those videos uniformly referred to them in terms that implied they were fakes, or at best unconfirmed. Unfortunately for that narrative, one of them triggered a reaction from the Dutch embassy saying that the perpetrator had been caught, convicted, and punished. So in other words, that one at least was perfectly real. The narrative remained unchanged even so.
As far as I can tell, May’s objections have nothing to do with the substance and only with the fact that she disapproves of (and wants to jail) the person that did the original tweeting. That’s known as “blaming the messenger” and also of course an example of the fact that the UK has no freedom of speech. The objections from others to Trump’s retweeting also seem to be of that type. I have seen nothing at all that suggests any of those videos are false, misleading, or doctored.
