Remember when Biden said police should shoot people in the legs to stop them, during a national debate.

Following the Walter Wallace shooting in Philadelphia, the narrative is that police “murdered another unarmed black man.

Except that he had a knife.

“But it’s a knife vs. a gun, that’s not fair.”

Yes, you are right, handguns don’t decapitate people.

A large knife is a serious weapon and not to be underestimated.

Only in a completely out-of-touch, all they know is what they see in the movies, word, shooting a man armed with a knife isn’t “fair” or “sporting.”

In the real words, madmen with knives can cause a lot of damage and death before being stopped for good.

    1. She was French, and the French didn’t meekly accept Islamic supremacism quickly enough.

Plus, she was also a Western woman who was all feminine out in the open and made the fanatic feel all funny and stuff.

  1. “But it’s a knife vs. a gun, that’s not fair.”

The people who don’t know anything about self defense say things like that.

For those of us who carry, the two words “Tueller Drill” ring out. From 20 feet away, they’ll be on you before you can unholster and draw your weapon.

    1. And the most prominent person who doesn’t know a thing about self defense, and never will, is Joe Biden.

    2. Interesting bit on the Tueller drill.

If I understand correctly, the reason why 21 feet was the distance used was because that was the size of the room they were working in. It is quite possible the distance is much larger.

I would be interested to see someone recreate the experiments and keep expanding the distance until the average everyday carrier can unholster and present their firearm. I would not be surprised to see the distance end up in the 30 foot range.

  2. Going to have to disagree with you on this:
“A large knife is a serious weapon and not to be underestimated.”

A small knife is a serious weapon and not to be underestimated. Any knife is a serious weapon and not to be underestimated.

I have cut myself with an Xacto knife. It was an accidental nick. Bled like you would not believe. I can only imagine the amount of grievous bodily harm I could inflict on another human being if I decided to attack them with that little 3/4 inch blade. Might take a while to be fatal, but it will not leave the victim unharmed.

  3. I’ve gotten into that “knife/sword vs. gun” debate with prominent anti-gun personalities. It did not change their views (shocker!), but may have swayed a few fence-sitters reading the comments (which is why we engage the antis, anyway).

    To whit:
    – A knife/sword is just as deadly as a gun. More so if the killer has any knowledge of human anatomy and can find arteries.
    – Related, deep knife wounds are harder to treat effectively (read: stop blood loss) than most gunshot wounds.
    – A knife/sword is usually quiet, much quieter than even a suppressed firearm shooting subsonic ammo.
    – Even cheap novelty knives available for a few dollars can inflict great bodily harm.
    – A knife/sword never jams, never runs out of ammo, and the “tackle the attacker while he’s reloading” tactic is more dangerous to the defender than the attacker — as are most melee-style responses.

And don’t forget that the hijackings that led to the 9/11 attacks were committed with box-cutters, not guns.

None of this should be construed to say that knives and swords should be more restricted. It merely shows that focusing solely on firearms doesn’t affect the ability of potential mass-killers to mass-kill, and guns may not even be the best weapon to use. (Knife attacks in China often end in 20+ deaths. Most mass-shootings in America aren’t that deadly.)

“Knife vs. gun” may not be “fair”, but fair is for the Olympics. This is self-defense, life-and-death. Self-defense should not be fair; it should overwhelmingly favor the defender, both practically and legally.

    1. I remember a time when I routinely carried a role of quarters in my pocket. “What weapon officer?” The deadliest weapon is the one between your ears. There is a YouTube video by Warrior Poet Society where they make a bludgeon out of newspaper and duct tape.

The explain how in many countries you can’t carry a weapon or get one. But getting a news paper and some duct tape is absolutely possible. In less than 5 minutes they had a short bludgeon that was more than capable of killing or injuring somebody.

I use to run a “fun” drill with my children. “Name five weapons you can see or make in this room.” Unfortunately after a year it got boring. To many different weapons that are easily at hand.

  4. This is why you should have several knives located in strategic locations in your house, along with your firearms.
Bayonets for your ARs are a must.
Buck knives, easy open folding knives, as well as the old standards: K-Bar, Bowie, and Kukri (Gurkha’s knife), and of course, as Miguel pointed out a while back, the machete. Hatchets are nice, also.
In your car or truck, also.
Note: many government facilities that ban legal firearms also ban knives over 3.5 inches.

    1. My daughter claimed and named her rifle “Stabby McStabby” as it has a bayonet lug and an M7 to go with it. Very formidable in both looks and capability.

NOTE: The bayonet lug is attached to the gas tube block front sight of an A2 style front sight. If you are using a carbine length gas tube and a 16 inch barrel, the bayonet lug might be to far back for the barrel ring to actual sit over the muzzle device. There are a couple of companies that sell extender bayonet lugs to move the lug forward the 1.5″ to let the bayonet fit.

I’m still looking for a reasonable bayonet lug to clamp to the barrel in front of the gas block on a low profile so that I can attach a bayonet to a rifle without the A2 style gas block.

      1. The Marine Corps bayonet looks an awful lot like the tried-and-true K-bar knife. I have both kinds of bayonets, but I always mount the USMC bayonet….

  5. Someone smarter than I am, once deliberated on home defense weapons. What I took away from that essay was your Mark 1- Mod Zero bad guy might conclude that you will not shoot him, but will offer different odds ref the likelihood you will not stab him with your big-knife-on-a-stick that is a bayonet affixed to a rifle.
