Highland Park police says they had two prior encounters with the shooter:

Won’t you look at that. He has previous encounters with law enforcement for violent threats, but those were not sufficiently dealt with so the shooter was able to pass a background check, buy a rifle and shoot up Stoneman Douglas High School Robb Elementary School an Independence Day parade.
Illinois already has a red flag law.
I guess nobody thought to invoke it.
The suicide attempt is the real shocker. I’m surprised that didn’t get him an involuntary commitment that would make him a prohibited person.
Or maybe Illinois didn’t inform NICS like what happened with Sutherland Springs.
I’d put even money on someone having said something to the FBI about him too, and that being ignored.
I guess the big takeaway is that the purpose of red flag laws is to be a political weapon because they certainly don’t stop crazy people who get the cops called on them from getting guns.
I wonder how many liberal gaskets we could blow by offering up the services of some of the local militia to be “Rooftop Koreans” to shut this kind of crap down…
Hmmm, it’s almost like gun control doesn’t actually work…
No, it’s working exactly as intended. The good guys couldn’t shoot back.
What a cluster fuck.
Tin foil hat time.
Imagine, if you will, a world in which the stasi concoct a “plot” to kidnap a governor, in which involuntary commitment and red flag laws exist, In which a surveillance state can read your every e mail, your every social media post, must approve every firearm purchase.
Now, imagine a dysfunctional loner buying “an assault weapon”, and lung-blower-outer ammunition…..
You have just entered…Jhiao Bribem’s Uhmeeerika!
Parents didn’t cooperate w/ authorities during the threatening incident. Dad said knives were his and got them returned. The dad sponsored a FOID card shortly after incidents.
Cool. Charge him as an accessory.
Highland Park has an “assault weapons ban” so apparently the rifle used by the murderer was illegal in that town. Hm…
Something not discussed that I have heard so far: did anyone shoot back? Even in that disarmed victim zone, presumably cops were armed. What did they do?
Law Enforcement and the courts regularly ignore Mental health Issues.

From my neck of the woods:
Greg Ulrich shot up and set off a few pipe bombs in a Buffalo Medical Clinic in February 2021. He shot several people and killed a nurse. He was pissed off at the doctors because they would not give him opioids. It was a beef going back several years.

Two years before, he threatened to do exactly that, shoot and blow up the clinic. Greg violated a restraining order and was charged, but found mentally incompetent. Except that little detail never got to the FBI and NICS. He later bought a S&W Handgun he used to shoot-up the clinic.

Hopefully this was fixed by the MN State Legislature:
