The Lewis gun, like the Maxim, was invented by an American. Lewis, like Maxim, had to sell his design overseas because the U.S. Army wouldn’t buy it. In WW1 the Marines, who had been using the Lewis gun and liked it, were ordered to give their Lewises to the British and take Chauchat guns instead. I understand some bitterness was felt.
