I know they weren’t concerned with hearing protection back then, but I wonder how well the elephant put up with it. Especially since fairly regularly you see stories about some elephant getting pissed about his job or the day of the week and going postal.
You know what? I get irrationally angry every time I see a -1895 CMG. You know why? Because some twit in the Rough Riders got one from his big sister before he went to Cuba. That’s right, his “doting big sister” as The Rifleman called her, ordered her little brother a MACHINE GUN from Abercrombie&Fitch before he went to fight the Spaniards.
You know what my sister gave me before I deployed?
A wool hat.

2) I have an old Sears catalog that belonged to my grandfather, used to line the bottom of a tool box, that has a listing in it for a Thompson Machine Gun. If the $125 was too high (about $1,700 today, or the cost of a new Auto Ordinance Deluxe Tommy Gun), the Iver Johnson .32 was a bargain at $5 (about $70 today).
