North Face turns back on local oil and gas company

Innovex Downhole Solutions says it was recently denied an order of jackets by The North Face, a popular outdoor recreation company because they are in the oil and gas business.

“I was surprised but not surprised if that makes sense,” Innovex CEO Adam Anderson said.

Innovex is based in Houston and has nearly 100 workers in the Permian Basin.

Each year, the company gets a Christmas gift for its employees. This year, it was supposed to be a North Face jacket with an Innovex logo, a company Innovex has ordered gear from in the past.

The company providing the jackets said The North Face doesn’t want to support the oil and gas industry in the same way they’d reject the porn industry or tobacco industry.

“They told us we did not meet their brand standards,” Anderson said. “We were separately informed that what that really meant is was that we were an oil and gas company.”

So oil and gas is just like porn?

Hu?  I was unaware that Porn Engineering was a thing.  My minor was Petroleum Engineering.  I should have switched to porn.

The mind numbing thing about this is that the best selling TNF products are 100% polypropylene and nylon, which are synthetic polymers that come from petroleum distillates.

Maybe the oil and gas industry should reciprocate. Leave them to make winter gear out of vegan hemp.

Fuck ’em, their shit is overpriced anyway.

  1. Get the word out- the next time northface execs want to go some where refuse to fill thier cars and planes with that evil oil product. Gas co needs to shut thier gas off in thier homes and business. Come ON America!! Start playing with the same rules

  2. Patagonia has done the same crap for many years. I used to use their products despite the price, but in the 80’s they bragged about supporting Earth First!, basically a terrorist organization. I wrote them politely and got a “screw yourself” answer. But without publicity and an organized boycott campaign, nothing will happen.

  3. I’m sure ditching the lightweight nylon/polyester parkas, tents, backpacks, etc. for Canvas duck will go over well with their hiking, and mountain climbing customers.

    1. Back before polymers, there were — very expensive and rather fragile — tents made from silk, if you wanted to pay for minimal weight.

  4. From the Wiki:

In May 2019, Leo Burnett Tailor Made, a marketing agency for The North Face Brazil, revealed that they had surreptitiously replaced photos of popular outdoor destinations on Wikipedia with photos featuring persons wearing North Face products in an attempt to get these products to appear more prominently in search engine results. Following widespread media coverage and criticism from the Wikimedia Foundation, The North Face apologized for the campaign, ended it, and the product placement was undone.

    But they have standards, y’all.

  5. Thanks for the heads up, I sent them an email telling them I would never purchase their products. Then I asked them if they knew how the plastic, that their buckles are made from, is made. Still haven’t heard back from them.

  6. Stopped wearing North Face years ago when I moved to a northern climate. Their stuff is not worth it. End of story. If you want to freeze to death, buy North Face.

(Yes, I will admit their high end stuff is good. But, there are better products for a lot less.)

If Innovex really wants to get jackets, they should look to the local Army Navy shop (or other local workwear retailer). If they have a Carhartt logo on their sign it is a good start. Most of them will do custom embroidery on whatever product you want to purchase from. And, because they generally cater to those that work their gear hard, they do not sell fashion crap.

  7. The North Face is headquartered in Alameda, California; The oil and gas industry’s contributions to California’s state and local governments amount to north of $22 billion in state and local tax revenues, $10 billion in sales tax, $7 billion in property taxes, and about $1 billion in income taxes.

  8. I always go back to the time when Dick’s Sporting Goods went woke over semi-automatic weapons and the ammo they fire….I’ll just ask nicely…North Face, please don’t be Dick’s.

  9. Suppose the nat gas supplier to their poly-whatever source, decided that, because “GAIA!”, they could not, in good conscience, supply petroleum products to them any longer.

And the owner of the pipeline agreed. After all, it’s only respectful of TNF’s environmental position, deeply believed in.

And said pipeline owner refused to rent access to any other supplier.

and filed environmental impact complaints regarding any attempt to permit another pipeline to be constructed to the plant(s)?

Would I have to visit a physician for a shadenboner lasting longer than 4 hours?
