On Saturday, a woman was killed and a man was wounded in an attempted murder-suicide at The Oaks Shopping Center in Thousand Oaks, California.

Some idiot went to Twitter to mock concealed carry advocates for the lack of a good guy with a gun to prevent the shooting.

I guess Ms. Goldberg didn’t know that The Oaks Shopping Center is a Macerich managed property which prohibits firearms as part of their code of conduct.

Thousand Oaks is in Ventura County, California.  California is a may issue state and the Ventrua Country Sheriff’s Department requires good cause to issue permits.  According to local CCW forums, the Sheriff doesn’t issue permits, using the “good moral character” clause to deny people CCW.

So to answer Ms. Goldberg, the reason that the “responsible gun owners” who “have their guns for protection” didn’t stop the shooting is that they were not allowed to carry in the mall by cooperate policy and in the state by state law and county policy.

Just like in Parkland, responsible gun owners are being blamed for a shooting that is the fault of government failure.

A gun free zone sign didn’t stop a man intent on killing his ex-wife from bringing a gun into the mall, but did did stop her or any other responsible person from being armed to come to her defense.

The solution seems simple to me.  Make California shall issue and let Californians CCW in malls.

  1. Since when is it my job to protect other people? We are told we are not police and when we come to the aid of strangers we do so with some legal peril.

My CCW is for me and my family and maybe, just maybe, a stranger.
