As Dwight Jaynes pointed out four years ago after the U.S. women beat Japan to capture the World Cup in Vancouver, there is a big difference in the revenue available to pay the teams. The Women’s World Cup brought in almost $73 million, of which the players got 13%. The 2010 men’s World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion, of which 9% went to the players.

Revenue Disparity Explains Pay Disparity Between Soccer World Cup’s Men And Women

Lee Iacocca recently passed away. He was involved in the creation of the Mustang line which has brought billions of dollars to Ford through the decades.  With Chrysler, he made the bail out and pushed the concept of the mini van which not only paid the company’s debt but brought another bunch of billions in profit. The Women’s Soccer team demanding “equal pay” is the equivalent of an hourly mechanic at Walmart demanding the same money and  bonuses as Iacocca because changing new set of tires on a pick up truck is being in the Car Industry and he should earn the same.

  1. Yes and no. The better question to ask is, compared to the US men in the USA, do they perform better and bring in more? The answer is likely to be yes. I guess there is a men’s team, but you don’t hear of it because they don’t win and don’t fill stadiums with fans.

    1. See, I like soccer. I know quite a few people who live and breathe soccer. The only time any of then ever mentions the women’s team is ‘oh, yeah, they’re in the women’s cup again’ and then go back to following UEFA, MLS, or the Men’s team. The women’s team complaining about not making as much money as the men’s team is like the NBA D-league champs saying they should make as much money as the Raptor’s.

It’s a different level of competition entirely. Put them up against each other, full effort, and thethe USWNT would be destroyed.

  2. What’s the bottom pro-Team in UEFA Men’s soccer?

Tell you what, girls, you beat that team 4 of 7 and we’ll talk.

Because if you can’t beat that team, then you aren’t doing the same work of, well, every other men’s team in Europe. Literally.

  3. Looks to me that the women take home 50% more of what their employers bring in than the men do.

  4. Obligatory sarcastic over-the-top sexist joke:

I bet they’d make more money if they played topless.

  5. Go ahead and carp about the pay. Your trans replacements will no doubt praise you as “fearless pioneers” as they cash the check.

  6. The women’s team is being paid 1/6th of the men’s, but only bringing in 2% of what the men’s team is earning. Shouldn’t they get paid less?

  7. What value do they bring to their employer?

NFL and NBA players get paid more than NHL players because the fan base is much larger and the merchandising is stronger. Women’s soccer? Who? What?

Additionally, there is a logical fallacy in play here. Apparently the women get paid a higher percentage of the overall revenue, but because it is a smaller dollar amount, somehow that is unfair. It is the same fallacy as the one about the Bush tax cuts only benefiting the rich. The lowest earners got a 5% tax cut, but because it did not result in the same dollar amount as the highest earners 3% cut it was ridiculously unfair.

  8. Pkoning said they bring in the fans and fill the stadiums. Well, maybe this year.

In general, they were utterly unknown to most of us and still few care and there are not that many eyeballs on them for advertisers to become entranced.

There is no great conspiracy to underpay them. There are just not many soccer fans in America and even less that give a damn about women’s soccer, so the modest money goes more often to the men’s teams, even if they are losers.

    Yawn. Not an outrage.

  9. Average attendance of women’s soccer is 6,000 per game. WNBA is 7,700.

Average attendance of men’s soccer is 21,000 per game. NBA average attendance is 17,987.

The NHL, has an average of 17,500 attending each game, and ESPN would rather show a rerun of fat white guys ;playing poker than show hockey games, unless it is the playoffs, even though hockey draws in many times the number of fans.

As one of my friends put it: “No one wants to pay $100 a person to watch chicks play sports at the same level as high school boys.”
