New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is learning a lot of new things in Washington — including what a garbage disposal is.
The 29-year-old freshman congresswoman posted photos and videos on Instagram showing the apparently “terrifying” contraption at work in her swanky DC apartment and saying she’d never seen one before.
“OK everyone I need your help because I just moved into this apartment a few months ago and I just flipped a switch and it made that noise and it scared the daylights out of me,” Ocasio-Cortez can be heard saying in footage.
“I am told this is a garbage disposal. I’ve never seen a garbage disposal. I never had one in any place I’ve ever lived,” she later said.

In Venezuela there is no “tradition” of garbage disposal and the first time I used one was when I moved to the states. But I knew the concept of garbage disposal from TV and movies, specially comedies when somebody was always sticking something they should not and then flipping the switch.
How is it possible that a woman is this stupid got elected to anything?
She singlehandedly has raised the reputations of the infamous Florida Man and Florida Woman by making them look smart.
These things are illegal in Germany and even I’ve known for years what a garbage disposal is… Can’t believe she’s my age. Hell I couldn’t be that stupid even if I tried…
I don’t believe it. This is more of her trying to expand on her “poor” upbringing. This is a woman who is trying to make it appear as though she was too poor for a garbage disposal.
They were banned in NYC until 1997 and most apartment buildings still ban them because they are afraid food waste will clog the old pipes. Only new luxury apartments have them. It’s something that expensive apartments in NYC advertise and the rest of us in the US take for granted.
That’s why a garbage disposal is such a luxury item for her, because of an NYC ban, only the super rich could own them.
This is more about her knowing nothing about what exists outside NYC than anything else.
The Babylon Bee is going to have to admit defeat on this one. Even they wouldn’t have tried “doesn’t know what a garbage disposal is” as a parody story.
Of course she can’t identify a garbage disposal — she’s a Marxist. Garbage is her faith.
