Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law: The Hits Keep Coming.

The Florida Sheriffs Association announced Friday that it supports the “stand your ground” law, saying it falls in line with the “well-established” right to self-defense.

The state’s sheriffs voted unanimously this week in favor of supporting the law, which has been especially controversial since the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

And then they went out for Starbucks Coffee. Keyword here: unanimously. If you got Broward’s Sheriff to vote along, this is some amazing face slap to Gun Control Cultists.

Had my Starbucks this morning….

My nearest Starbucks is next to my regular gas station. It comes in handy since the truck was in need of ugly fossil hydrocarbon fuel refill also.

0star2I wanted to sit outside, but it had been raining on and off all night long and they had not prepped the outside.

0star1So I went in, had a double shot of espresso and bought those things for the wife. I still insist Cuban coffee from the side window of any local cafeteria tastes much better. But this was a political statement in favor of a corporation that refused to be bullied by the Cultists, the Unsatisfied and The Poltroons. The place was not full or even had  anybody at the counter waiting to be served but that changed pretty fast after I was served. At no time my sidearm tried to slide out of the holster and start engaging targets of opportunity. At no time I felt the sudden urge to yell in Tongues and start attacking innocent nuns buying muffins for the orphans in tow. I took the pic, had my coffee while watching the people coming in and out and when finished I simply left…like any other regular folk.

I saw the Starbucks no smoking outside within 25 feet sign and chuckled. Their version of the Tuller Drill I guess. 🙂

Did you support your local Starbucks today?

Experiencing Trauma.

A blog that I read a lot but I shamefully admit give little advertising.

This morning Greg Ellifritz posted an article about the Ross Township shooting in Pennsylvania. A reporter at the scene said that some of the people were off to the side throwing up. A comment to the blog expressed concern that one might find himself in a similar position if forced to deal with a mass shooting type of situation and having to face the sights and sounds of the carnage going on around them instead of responding or helping.

How do you prepare for that? How do you ensure you aren’t the one curled in a ball and expelling your breakfast or passed out when you should be seeking cover or fighting or helping? Is there a way?

via Limatunes’ Range Diary: The Sights And Sounds of Trauma.

I am pretty much immune by now at the sight of blood and internal organs out-of-body containment although smell might get me, specially rot. My immunization came about by father’s printing business…. yep. His biggest client was this small but very busy emergency-only hospital that was the go-to for a population of over 500,000 in my early years. Many times I went with him while he was delivering printed goods (Later on, I was making the deliveries and strolling through the place) and I got to see people in different states of hurting. Car accidents, major falls, shootings and my personal less-than-frigging favorite: machete cuts… I have seen them. I am still amazed that a human body can receive so much damage and somehow keep going even if for a little while.

One thing I have not seen is serious burn victims. I have no idea how I would react to a 50% or more burn victim. I had a neighbor who suffered partial face, partial chest and arm burns for screwing with a welder next to a unnoticed spill of gasoline and I was the one that had to prep him and take him to the hospital.

The other thing that has helped me is the attacks of klutziness I had through my life. Not very many, but I have cut, burn, pierced and smashed myself enough times I am not scared at the sight of my own blood, but I will become a big baby if I get the flu.

The last thing that helped me has been learning & training First Aid/First Responder. Just having the knowledge about what to do will help you take control of yourself and the situation at hand. If somebody goes down, doing something other than calling 911 and gawking uselessly makes for better stomach fortitude….at least while the S is hitting the fan. You can puke on yourself after the fact all you want.

I’d say if you want to get over any possible squeamishness, learn First Aid and you may also want to volunteer at a hospital with an ER even if it is some simple stuff. It is amazing what you can pick up by just observing professionals in action and/or listening to their comments. That is not to say that in a months time, you’ll be delivering babies, but learning some basic things that may help somebody survive till the Pros get to the location is not a bad thing to acquire.

My Squee of the Week.

Way back in the Old Ages (Namely the 70s) some musicians used to do albums with a single concept and they used to be called Rock Operas. Mostly double LPs, but there were a few triples and the occasional single LP (Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull comes to mind) which involved not only the band but some extra non-rock musicians and even full-fledged orchestras.

The whole thing pretty much died before the end of the 70s as musical tastes degenerated into Disco, but my particular favorite will always be Journey to the Centre of The Earth by Rick Wakeman. Now imagine my shock when today I find that there was actually a video of one of the Journey concerts available. This is the time were professional video recorders were pretty much the size of a Mini Cooper and video Cameras the size of Vespa scooters.

Journey was my second “serious” album given to me as a gift by a very cute girl who I always had a crush on but I was too cowardly to do anything about it. And my first “serious” album was Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake and Palmer….. OK, no wonder I am kinda weird.

If you feel like listening to some seriously old Prog Rock, have at it!

This Friday, Aug 9, 2013: Time to get some Coffee!

As you may or may not have heard, an anti gun group, Moms Demand Action, is putting pressure on Starbucks over their corporate policy on guns. Starbucks has a corporate policy of honoring state and local laws regarding the carry of firearms in their stores. This means that if it’s legal to carry a gun in a state, Starbucks corporate policy will respect that right and welcome gun carriers.

Starbucks is not “pro gun”, but rather neutral on the subject. This is really all we can ask as gun owners and carriers of any private business. So, in opposition to the boycott and to show support for a company which respects the Constitution and state laws, gun owners are encouraged to spend money with Starbucks on August 9, 2013 to show your support and offset any boycotts

via Gun Owners: Show Your Support To Starbucks On Aug 9, 2013.

Since here in Florida we still don’t have Open Carry, I plan to sit a table, place my CWP next to the cup of java and take pic. And yes, I will be carrying the one with them awful high-capacity assault magazine clips. That should be enough to make Moms Demand Victims mess they eye makeup.

Post your picture here in comments or over the Facebook page or if you have a Twitter account, remember to add @MomsDemand to the tweet!

Make them cry lemonade!

Days of our Trailers spanks CSGV.

To get their BS number for ‘Chicago, Illinois, they added an additional 6.8 million people that DON’T live in ‘Chicago, Illinois’. The REAL homicide rate for the CITY of Chicago, where all the laws they want are in place, is 15.94/100k for the year of 2011. Removing Chicago, the homicide rate for the rest of the MSA was 2.6/100k, almost 1/6 that of the CITY of Chicago.

So who are the ‘liars’ now? or are they all just idiots?

Bring out the fireworks! (NOT!)
MDA SYG HearAnd according to the news bit in Yahoo, the hearings may happen.

MIAMI (Reuters) – Florida lawmakers will hold hearings this fall on the state’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law, which has become a lightning rod for criticism following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

The announcement on Friday by Will Weatherford, the speaker of Florida’s House of Representatives, marked the biggest concession yet by the state’s Republican leaders to protesters’ demands for a top-to-bottom review of the law, which allows people in fear of serious injury to use deadly force to defend themselves rather than retreat.

Except, that the Sun Sentinel caught something that is not a cause of celebration for the haters of Stand Your Ground:

For a brief moment there, Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford stood apart from Republican leaders in Tallahassee by saying he would convene a legislative hearing on the state’s controversial Stand Your Ground law in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict.

But after suggesting that lessons might be learned and changes made to protect the innocent, Weatherford quickly dashed hopes by choosing one of the law’s biggest supporters to chair the hearing.

So much for an objective review of the law’s unintended consequences.

Consider what the committee chair, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, told the Tampa Bay Times after agreeing to lead the hearing: “I don’t support changing one damn comma of the Stand Your Ground law.”

“It would be reactionary and dangerous to make Floridians less safe to pacify uninformed protesters,” said Gaetz, who chairs the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee.

So there you have it. A committee hearing with a foregone conclusion.

The article goes on admitting that there is simply too many people who support Stand Your ground laws to make a change feasible or even something to consider a thought. They will continue to go after it as Assault Weapon has lost its luster and Universal Background Checks are getting old. They need a new product to hate and the Zimmerman verdict (even though SYG had nothing to do with the case but who are we to challenge The Narrative) is still fresh enough and lied about enough to have some legs.

And we will be there come the Fall, just in case.
