Two decades ago when I moved to Miami, South Beach was Gay paradise. I am going to say 60% to 70% of businesses catered to Gay clientele and although you also got to see the sad and seedy part of night life, the idea of targeting gays with homophobic violence was unheard of.
Now? South Beach has become… I really can’t define it other than a mix of crowds in an alcoholic debauchery and a sense of anything goes without consequences.
If you re Gay and want to enjoy Florida sun and beach time, I think Key West is still an option.
When we moved to Miami for my couple year stint down there, the wife wanted to go out to dinner on South Beach.
Ho-lee shit. I’m no hayseed/Ernest goes to the big city type, but South Beach was something else. I was ready to leave as soon as we walked onto Ocean Dr. It was a nice night and a good dinner, but I don’t think I took my hand off the Fox Labs pepper spray in my pocket most the night.
We all know the rule “nothing good happens after modnight.”
There is another one specific to Miami: “nothing good happens outside the Ocean 9 Liquor.”
That place is a magnet for all the trash on Miami Beach.
