From the California Globe:

L.A. Teachers Union: Schools Can’t Reopen Unless Charter Schools Shut Down, Police Defunded

In what appears to be a labor union power play, the United Teachers Los Angeles union announced Friday that Los Angeles Unified District schools effectively cannot reopen unless certain conditions are met: privately operated publicly funded charter schools are shut down, police are defunded, Medicare-for-All government-run health care is passed, a statewide wealth tax is implemented, housing for homeless is fully funded, “financial Support for Undocumented Students and Families,” and they want a federal bailout because “the CARES and HEROES Acts provided funding for K-12, both fell far short of what would be needed to rescue districts and state and local governments.” The source cited for this claim is the National Education Association, the largest labor union and special interest group in the United States.

The teachers were sent home because of the virus.  We’re told schools are to stay closed because of the virus.

Multiple groups from the White House to the American Academy of Pediatrics want schools to reopen because the kids need it.

Teachers were saying they were afraid of the virus.

Now the LA County teachers have made it clear that the virus isn’t on their radar.  They want social justice and Leftist insanity.

According to the NY Post, the teachers union wants the police defunded and money handed over to them.

They also want charter schools closed, which they see as a threat to them.

If they don’t  get all the political garbage they want they will not return to work and blame the virus for it.

The LA teachers have totally ripped the mask off.  This us no longer about the virus. This is about using the virus to strong arm the people into acquiescing to extreme political positions that would be untenable under normal circumstances.

  1. Reagan had it right. Give them 24 hours to return to work. Whoever does not gets fired.

Shame CA is being run into the ground by Newsome. They are likely to get everything they want, plus get to stay home because of CCP virus.

  2. Wow. That was a lot of crap to wade through to find the actual information.

J.Kb links to a site that I had not heard of which linked to a site I hadn’t heard of. The first link does have the pull quotes used and lists the demands of “the teachers union.”

You have to follow the links to the links to get to https://www.utla.net/sites/default/files/samestormdiffboats_final.pdf before you can find the source for those demands.

I believe that UTLA is the teachers union for LA and it looks like the real deal. Skip to page 10 plus to start reading their demands. The first 9 and a half pages are mostly statements about how scary and dangerous the CCP virus is. How horrible Trump, the government have been in dealing with the virus and how they need more money.

    Good find J.Kb.

  3. Not going to return to work?

Fine. You quit. No need to pay you. Since you quit, you are not eligible for unemployment benefits either.

  4. I’m sure that there are plenty of teachers out there who don’t agree with the Union on most or all of this.

The problem is, the dissenters choose to tolerate the Union instead of calling it out, no matter how ridiculous it gets.

(In many ways, I don’t blame them — my workplace’s union is pretty hardcore Leftist as well — but after the SCOTUS decided employees can’t be required to pay into unions they don’t agree with, people started standing up and calling out the crap, so I’d think someone would have stood up to this one by now, too.)

If by some miracle the Union’s demands aren’t kowtowed to, we’ll see how many individual educators have the spine to cross the picket line and work, either to keep their pay or for the benefit of the students.

It’s pretty clear both of those are near the bottom of the priority list for this Union.
