A delegation from both the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain took part Monday evening in the central menorah lighting at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, in a ceremony described by the site’s chief rabbi as a “Hanukkah miracle.”

“It is a Hanukah miracle to see the delegation from the UAE and Bahrain here with us participating in the Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony,” he said. “Who would have believed that peace would come to our house in such a magnificent way?”

UAE, Bahrain delegations take part in Western Wall Hanukkah lighting ceremony

The video choked me up a little. Arabs lighting the menorah with a smile on their faces, happy to be there? It is a frigging miracle!

Israel has been in conflict with the Arab world all my life, more than that.  I still remember as a kid what for many is just today history lessons: from the harassments of the neighbors to the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur war.  Sincerely, I believed going to my grave without seeing any progress and recognition of the State of Israel by former “enemies” even if Egypt was the glaring example that it could happen.

Here is to that not only holds but continues.

Shalom!

    1. They will because they have to. Nothing stands in the way of the narrative, which in the case of Israel is that peace in the Middle East hinges on Israel making every possible concession to the Palestinians.

    2. Biden will try to fuk it up because Obama will tell him to restore the Iran Nuclear Deal fluster cluck to restore his foreign policy legacy. Ironically, Biden’s efforts to cozy up to Iran at the expense of Israel will only drive the non-Iranian muslims closer to Israel to solidify the regional opposition to Iran.

      1. Bingo. The Saudis had already opened under-the-table talks with Israel because they want NO part of a nuclear Iran.

If the Polident-Elect opts to ‘reengage’ the Iran deal, expect Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt to ‘shut down air defense radars for maintenance’ right about the time Israeli bombers hit Iran. Oops, oh well, can’t be helped, inshallah.

  1. I did not expect to see “A great miracle happened here” to be something I could actually witness myself.

  2. I guess these visitors weren’t actually official government representatives, but one would suspect they had the approval of the authorities. That would be interesting, because if so it amounts to a tacit recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Old Jerusalem. That’s a much bigger deal still than a Chanukah celebration.
