The USS Indianapolis carried the Hiroshima bomb from the US to the Pacific. On the return trip, it was sunk by a Japanese sub. They were out of contact with the fleet because of the secrecy of the mission.

If it sounds familiar, it might be because another movie had one of the greatest monologues ever done in Hollywood regarding the sinking of the Indianapolis. It flipped what could have been just a summer “B” movie into a classic and secured the career of a young director.
