Continuing the saga started by J. Kb.
But gun instructors are concerned about lack of training-for those who choose to open carry. Proctor says he is confident citizens will be responsible if they decide to open carry. “Most folks that are going to be willing to do that, are going to do that, they are going to be trained.”
Detmer is not so sure, because of what he says he sees in his classes of inexperienced gun users. He doesn’t believe people will get training if it is not required.”They will not. I guarantee you I am 100 percent sure. I know that without state requirements, people will not spent time and money on training. It will not happen.”
Dan Detmer runs Firearms on Target and it is also slightly miffed that he no longer has a government-mandated captive clientele. Nothing “warms” my heart as much as seeing a “fellow” Gun Owner standing on an ant hill of faux self-importance and giving ammunition to the Opposition . Dear Dan, shut up and embrace the Free market, a Free Market that includes the advertising of your business, what a concept!
It is hard to transition to a new business model where you actually have to go out and find clients. Being attached to the fat cow of a government mandate is easy cash income with low overhead. But I know you can overcome it with a simple set of ideas if you are willing to accept some cuts. Here are some ideas:
- Stop talking crap about your possible clients.
- Advertise in Gun Shops. Offer deals like Ladies Range Day Half Off.
- Offer Free Basic Training for women who need immediate protection.
- Family bundles of up to five people, 30% off.
- Groupon! Yes, they are back allowing training in some markets.
- Sponsor competition shooters, have them wear NASCAR Shirt with your logo & sell your training.
- Stop talking crap about your possible clients.
And this is me, the worst salesman in the world with barely half a cup of coffee inside me. Imagine what you could do with some serious self-determination and the willingness of removing your lips from bureaucratic nipples.
– Get more training so you have something to sell other than NRA Personal Protection classes
– Get more training so you know how to teach better
– Learn how to market yourself. Twitter is free. Facebook is free. Email is (almost) free. Youtube is free. Websites are cheap
– Bring in “name” instructors to boost your rep in the market. You’re not Tom Givens, but if you get known as the guy who knows Tom Givens, that can only help you
Oh Lord!! These 2nd Amendment “BUT” guys kill me. If he is 100% sure, I blow his entire argument. I was a Pennsylvania boy, where they are shall issue for 17 dollars. I took all the NRA classes, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, PPITH, PPOTH and both reloading skills, THEN I went and got certified to teach them all. So I went through twice. 100% sure I just beat his entire argument in 1 sentence.
Now I am in California(thank you for your condolences) The sheriff of the county dictates WHO is an approved instructor. NOT which class you pass, but the PPOTH AND who can be approved to teach it. Since I live in LA, I can not get a CCW,(The LA sheriff does not offer them) but I can approve those in other counties. (Kern and Orange)Another example of stupidity on steroids.
This is what government can do.
I am an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, I am an Appleseed Rifle Instructor. I see stupid shit. I believe people should seek training and should be trained. I believe it is wrong to mandate training. I believe it IS an infringement on your rights. Can I make a case that the revolver in Grandma’s bedside table drawer will work for her without training? Yup! The original point and click interface. Would I like her to be trained? Of course! Do I want anyone’s rights to self defense tools infringed by a requirement? Nope! Ain’t gonna happen.

I was a small arms instructor in the marines for a while. “One of the best teaching the best” as they always told us. Fast foreword. 5 years ago we got shall issue in Iowa. When they were done writing the law, training by a NRA certified instructor was the only training they would except. I already had a curriculum written and was ready to go. They shot me down because the NRA when they wrote the law, made sure to feather their own nest and screw everyone else.
I do believe in training, as much as you can get and/or afford. People like these bitching about “losing” customers pisses me of. When I got shot down on training, I applied for another FFL and started manufacturing ammo. There’as always a way to fill the void.
