“Give them what they want” becomes expensive when your life is valued at nothing.

I cannot say I know what is going through the mind of the cashier, but “this cannot be happening” might be a good bet. Also, just plain brain vapor lock should be considered.

  1. You gotta be F-ing kidding me.
Look, a bit of “give them what they want” might be the correct move when you hand over a few dollars from the cash draw, or whatever. But, you are doused with lighter fluid. And, then you hear the criminal clicking a lighter. Get the F up, immediately.

Panic/freezing up. End of story. Cannot think of anyone else.

  2. I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I was young and attractive, we were taught to be passive. Let the dirty man rape you; it’s better than him beating or killing you. Be quiet. Do what they want and you may be damaged but at least you’ll walk away.

I don’t teach my kids that. I teach them what Malcolm Reynolds says: “…don’t you ever stand for that sort of thing. Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill ’em right back.” In grade school we taught them to be proactive. We taught them, “We don’t start fights, but we sure as hell end them.” Taught my girls that if some dude ever does something bad, or looks like he might do something bad, you either get away, or you kick, scream, punch, bite, spit, wriggle, drop dead weight, fight back, do NOT go passive. You’re either going to live or you’re going to die, and if death is your lot, take some of them with you.

There’s something to be said for standing up and looking an enemy in the eye. I might be tiny (at 5’1″, pretty much everyone not a kid is taller than me, and even the kids around here are LOL), but I will square off with you if I think I’m in danger. If I get that quiet voice, have my eye firmly on you, and start taking a defensive stance, you better decide quick whether you really want to be in this fight.

Most people who do that kind of thing (referring to the video) are bullies. You stand up to bullies and they leave. This isn’t to say there aren’t a few who will blow your head off, but let’s face it… if they’ve made the decision to do that when they walk in, your behavior or lack thereof isn’t going to change that decision.
