8. Small Arms Repair School, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, 1974. In our class on the M-60 MG, instructors explained that if the gun over heats, the heat will cause the rounds to cook off in the chamber before the bolt fully closes. Operating gas pressure drops, and the bolt will not cycle rearward far enough to engage the sear. The gun will continue to fire even after you release the trigger.

   6′ 7″ Army SFC instructor further explains this is called a “Runaway gun”.

   5’8″ USMC SSG instructor: “NOOOOOO! A GUN DOESN’T HAVE LEGS! IT CAN’T RUNAWAY! IT’S CALLED “UNCONTROLLED FIRE!”
