Doesn’t help that the popular understanding of “felony” as being roughly congruent with “capital or otherwise infamous crime” is completely out of line with the current legal meaning.
So if the subject is restoration of voting rights, the example felons might be guilty of pilfering an avocado, sneaking a second movie in a multiplex cinema, or releasing a helium balloon; if the subject is weapons, then all felons are murderers and similar.
All very handy for civil, informed, and coherent public discourse.
This was my main objection to the proposal and why I voted against it. Why restore some rights and not all rights?
A further, somewhat related thought….
Isn’t it strange that the Democrats want to import voters from south of the border, and also bar Catholics from holding public office? (Yeah, yeah: logical consistency is a racist patriarchal construct.)
