The Select Slug Drill | Sheriff Jim Wilson

There’s no doubt that the defensive shotgun is an awesome weapon. A load of buckshot–or slug–placed properly will usually give the bad guy extremely celestial thoughts. We used to say that his case would be pled to a Higher Court.

If you have a pump shotgun at home, you have to read this article. The point he makes about patterning buck shot is very important. Years ago I took a shotgun class and the first thing we had to do is to figure out how buckshot spread at different distances.

The drill was simple: On a target,  tape 4 sheets of regular letter-size paper each marked with a different distance in yards (5-10-15-20). Start at 5 yards and shoot once at the paper marked 5 yards. then move back to 10 yards and shoot at the paper marked 10 yards…and so on, you get the idea.  By then you should have a pretty good idea how much the pellets open at certain distances and you can tailor your buckshot defense accordingly as in how far away can you deliver the maximum amount of pellets to the target in a vital zone and when it becomes inefficient or a crap-shot of missed pellets going where they are not supposed to.

One important detail: this pattern will work only with the specific brand and model of buckshot you are using. Do not assume that all shells will create the same pattern over the same distance: make sure! The smart among us (idiot here not included) will buy several different brands, perform pattern tests on all and then select the one that delivers the tightest pattern the farthest for that particular and individual shotgun. Yup, you cannot even be confident that equal make and models of shotguns will pattern the same with the same shells.

Once you know your shotgun/buckshot limit, then is time to transition to slug and to learn and practice the drill told by Sheriff Wilson.  Be slow, deliberate, patient and safe (do get the dummy shells) as you will be all thumbs on a drunken monkey trying to juggle all at once from the get go.  On Step 3, do not try to save/keep the ejected shell; forget about it. You are supposed to be training to perform the switch of shells because you need it right-at-this-minute and have no time to be adding an extra step or fishing for a rolling shell.

If you are able to find a shotgun class, take it. It is amazingly fun plus you will be amazed at all the things you can do (and cannot do) with a shotgun. Be ready to be sore the next day 🙂

Did I forget to mention it was a night class? The low light added an extra level of fun.

Moms Demand: They do Creative Stats (re: Moms Demand: I Choked Too)

On the previous post, I was wondering how in the hell The Moms came up with the 24 school shootings for 2013.  Bill Baldwin and Walt were kind enough to point out the link.

Same as with Slate and its list of people killed by guns and used by Illegal Mayors Against Guns, the Moms Demand follower used a list provided by the Daily Beast and let us say it brings the definition of creativity to the area of plain deception.

When you or anybody hears the expression “School Shooting” your mind immediately goes to a Columbine-Virginia Tech-Sandy Hook- type of attack: Gunman (men) going into a school and proceeding to massacre innocents.  This is now ingrained deeply in the collective mind of this country.  I am sure that both Moms Demand and The Daily Beast understand this fact, but they get deceptive in a “What the meaning of the word ‘Is’ is”. Here are some of the examples from The School Shootings You Didn’t Hear About—One Every Two Weeks Since Newtown.

  • Gang shootings or suspected (2 cases)
  • Suicide – No threat to anybody (5 cases)
  • Suicide – Possible threat to others.
  • Murder in front of a school while dropping kids off.
  • One on One kills during sporting events (2 cases)

But I had to screen cap my favorites, specially the last two:

Moms School Shootings 2014 2

Moms School Shootings 2014 3

Moms School Shootings 2014 5

Moms School Shootings 2014 6

So basically, if it happened near the school building and there was a bullet involved, they call it a school shooting.

Is it so hard for these people to understand that they are hurting their already diminished reputation by pulling a stunt worthy of shysters in cheap polyester suits and loud ties? I don’t  mind it one bit as it gives us more ammunition and people still undecided will feel betrayed by this idiocy.

And that is why we win.

Moms Demand: I choked too.

I beg your sweet pardon?

Moms School Shootings 2014

I have to say I choked myself a little bit.  Where did this person get the 28 school shootings since Newtown? That would be more than 2 school shooting per month, every month for the past year.

I have noticed that Moms and other groups are flexible with their definitions whenever is convenient.  Mass killings can be now any time when 2 or more people are killed by anybody and any reason,. So I would not be surprised that a school shut-down because of a crime committed nearby a locale of education is suddenly considered a school shooting. There has been a fair share of Violent Campus crime, so I would not be surprised  they are included in the mix.

So, other than the Arapaho High School incident (which does not help them much due to its outcome), I do not remember any more of these school shootings happening. Of course, I cannot be sure because The Media is in collusion  with the NRA to keep these School Shootings under wraps so both can keep profiteering from their unregulated  sales of fully automatic assault atomic weapons with 30 round assault magazine clips….. yeah, that might be it.

Stand Your Ground is a racist Law! (wait….what?…who?)

Gabriel Mobley had long claimed self-defense in fatally shooting two unarmed men – one of whom he insisted appeared to be reaching for a weapon under his shirt – during a 2008 scuffle outside a North Miami-Dade restaurant.

On Thursday, a Miami-Dade appeals court agreed.

In a decision under Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground self-defense law, the court ordered the dismissal of Mobley’s murder charges, saying he acted reasonably because the slain men, though apparently unarmed, were the aggressors.

“The shooting at issue did not occur in a vacuum,” Third District Court of Appeals Judge Linda Ann Wells wrote in the 2-1 opinion. “Mobley did not shoot two innocent bystanders who just happened upon him on a sidewalk.”

The ruling, which for now clears the Opa-locka man of killing Jason Jesus Gonzalez and Rolando Carrazana, marks the first time the local appeals court has granted immunity to a defendant under the Stand Your Ground law.

It is gonna be a biatch to play the race card against this guy.  The prosecutor is appealing so we will be hearing more about this case.

Book Review: Civilian Warriors: The Inside Story of Blackwater and the Unsung Heroes of the War on Terror

Civilian Warriors: The Inside Story of Blackwater and the Unsung Heroes of the War on Terror.

One of the great things about the Gun Culture is the possibility to meet people who you only read about or see in some 30 second tidbit in the news. I met PMC’s and found them to be regular folk and not the barbaric, blood-thirsty mercenaries portrayed in the news and the halls of congress.

Erik Prince is the founder of the now extinct Blackwater and this book is his way to clear the smoke and bullshit created around the company and its people.  Some in the Old Media are already classifying this book as a puff job but it rings loud as truthful for one reason: Whenever you deal with the State Department, rest assured you will be shafted faster than an 18-year-old in a Maximum Security Prison.

Some years ago, there was a big IDPA match at Blackwater HQ and I was not able to attend for family reasons. A dear friend brought be a Blackwater cap as souvenir and I just put it away for keepsake. After reading the book, I am even more determined to save it till I croak.  What these people did is nothing short of amazing and a demonstration of what private business can do (better, faster and cheaper) than the Government.

But success breeds envy and ill will among some political rats and legal piranhas. Blackwater had to go down and it did…. but even so, they triumphed. I don’t want to give away anything, just buy the book and remember all the stuff said about them and compare it with the book.

God Bless Erik Prince and his people.
