I got tired of telling people who “wanted to lose weight” how I lost all my mine. I am done even sharing the fact I was once a 4XL-wearing, 400 pounds mass of blubbering humanity and I managed to lose almost half that excess because most people do not like the answer.

I usually gave them chapter and verse of all I did, the tricks I used and obviously warned them that it worked for me and they may need to adapt some stuff to their lifestyles. They listened attentively, but once they realized the work required discipline, you could hear and see their brains disconnecting and their minds switching to the Arby’s Half Pound Roast Beef Meal coupons they have in the glove compartment of their vehicles (Cheese not included).

Interestingly enough, there are a couple of friends who are actually doing dieting and progressing nicely: They are both shooters. Why? Not because of the guns but because they are already conditioned on following a discipline knowing that it works. Maybe it is a big jump from Cooper’s Four Rules to Counting Calories, but the principle stands: Discipline is key.

And it not only applies to losing weight but pretty much anything else in life you have to do to succeed. There are no magic Harry Potter waves of the wand to give you lasting success. There is only hard work performed with constant regularity.

That is all.

  1. You are correct. I’m probably 150 lbs down from my fattest. I don’t know what it was because the scale maxed out at 350 lbs.

What I do know is the hardest part of weight loss was learning to eat one burger instead of two and one Oreo instead of six.

    But slowly it worked.

The entire “far pride” movement is another Leftist vice into virtue transmutation.

The lack the self discipline to lose the weight. Rather than learn it, they call you a bigot and tell you to be non-judgmental.

  2. I don’t remember a lot of the stuff they taught me in ROTC, but one thing that stuck with me is this: “There is no discipline other than self-discipline.” There can be any number of rules, laws, guidelines, diet plans, or whatever, but without self-discipline they don’t really matter. Incidentally, this applies as much to losing weight as it does to shooting, crime, parenting, etc.

  3. What I am hearing is… simply owning the exercise DVDs is not enough? I actually have to watch them, AND physically duplicate what they are doing?

    Damn… I’m out.

Seriously though, 1. Great to see you dropping the pounds. There is no such thing as healthy fat. 2. You are correct about everything you want to achieve. Whether it is learning to play a musical instrument, losing weight, or anything else especially shooting.

Choosing to do the hard(er) thing is 100% internal. You must want to do it. Smokers will not quit smoking until they want to, same with any other bad habit. Discipline is key to any achievement. It is damned near impossible to do anything without it.
