From Pix11:

Health workers that volunteered to come to NY during pandemic have to pay state income tax: Cuomo

Health care workers that came to New York to help fight the coronavirus pandemic at its epicenter will have to pay state taxes, according to the governor.

He addressed the issues Tuesday at a news conference.

“We’re not in a position to provide any subsidies right now because we have a $13 billion deficit,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “So there’s a lot of good things I’d like to do, and if we get federal funding, we can do, but it would be irresponsible for me to sit here looking at a $13 billion deficit and say I’m gonna spend more money, when I can’t even pay the essential services.”

Any out-of-state resident who’s come to the Empire State to work on coronavirus relief is subject to the tax after 14 days here.

There are thousands of emergency workers here who’ve responded to requests by Cuomo and Mayor Bill De Blasio for help. Many of them are collecting paychecks from companies back in their home states, which allowed them to come to New York to volunteer.

So if you are a nurse or first responder, and your employer in another state let you help in the epicenter of New York, and you work there for more than days, even though you live in another state and are getting paid in another state, New York is entitled to tax you between 4% and 8.82%.

His Royal Highness Andrew Cuomo will not waive the taxes for out of state volunteers because he needs the money.

And New Yorkers wonder why they are not getting the love and support they did after 9/11.

This is why.  Because a nurse or paramedic who rushed their lives and rushed to help in New York when New York said they were having a crisis didn’t expect to have to pay for the privilege of volunteering to save lives in NYC.

Every bit of news coming out of New York is just shit.

They bumble-fucked the response, killed thousands of elderly with bad policies, and charged out of state workers for their volunteering.

Next time New York has a crisis, I suspect the rest of the country to tell them “fuck you” and wall it off so that the crisis doesn’t spread to the rest of America.

Spread the love

  1. “His Royal Highness Andrew Cuomo will not waive the taxes for out of state volunteers because he needs the money.”

And… that is the problem right there.

If he had cited the law, and stated that until the legislature provides some kind of relief to that aspect of the law, his hands are tied, I would be OK with it. But, he didn’t. He needs the cash, so if you are working here, you donate to his coffers.

This jackhole got elected because of his last name, and he is not a patch on his father. While I disagree with Mario Cuomo’s politics, he was at least a politician you could respect.

  2. This vile smear of excrement is going to run for President in 2024, and the equally repugnant bottom feeders in the mainstream media are going to do everything in their power to flush stuff like this down the memory hole.

    1. Difference between a classic Godfather-esque mafia don and a modern gang member.
      Mario Cuomo stayed bought.

  3. They do that to athletes as well. There are several cities and states that do that. I recall reading a story where a baseball player had to file something like 25 different tax returns because of all the places he plays.

  4. OK, not being a dick, but I am one miserable asshole.

I drove a truck into the NYC shithole twice a week for a year and a half. Initially I was upset when I got let go, but discovered how much I HATED IT when I wasn’t doing it anymore. I have no reason to ever go to NYC again. People who live there can just reap what they sow.

As an active firefighter/EMT I just scoffed at the idea to go volunteer to help those assholes out. This tax issue confirms I was right.

  5. One of the things I noticed is how that magic 14 days happened. I read about a number of people that were told that they were coming for “two weeks” so call it 12 days. They would be free of the NYC tax man if that was the case.

But if they were asked to extend for another week, suddenly the NY tax man is there to take their cut.

MA is another one of those horrible states where they tax you whatever way they can.

If your employer is based in Mass. OR if the place where your office/work place is in Mass. then you are required to pay Mass income tax. Regardless of where you live.

So it is possible to live in CT, commute to MA and end up paying both states.

I’m not sure if MA or CT allows you to deduct your state income taxes from the income tax you pay the other state.

When I moved to MD I got hit with an extra “registration fee” when I registered my car. I had purchased the car in MI. The MI sales tax was less than the MD sales tax. So when I registered the car in MD for the first time, I owed the difference between the two sales taxes as a “first time registration fee.”

This is because Delaware has no sales tax. People were going to Delaware to buy things in order to avoid the MD sales tax. MD decided they were loosing to much money. Therefore if you bought a car in Delaware when you registered it in MD you paid the same in sales taxes as if you had purchased it in MD.

The tax man always cheats and he always wins.

    1. As for MA, I think that case is a bit different. I dealt with that for years. The way I remember it is that a non-resident owes MA taxes only if he works in MA for more than half of the year.
      I like NH.

  6. The tax man WILL get his cut – one way or another. I could probably write a dissertation on the ways that I personally know of but I won’t 😉
One quick example will suffice: the winners on the Price Is Right have to pay state income tax on their winnings, regardless of where they are from.

    1. In the case of “The Price Is Right”, though, it’s understandable. They “earned” it in CA. Ditto for “Jeopardy!”

I read a story once about the enormous number of “fabulous prizes” that go unclaimed, because the winning contestants have to pay the CA taxes on them before they can claim them. Those all-expenses-paid $40k vacations? The cars? The $120k cash prizes for returning champions? Yeah, most people can’t afford the taxes up-front, so they end up with nothing.

  7. Just affirms the old saying: No good deed goes unpunished.

Especially in “Progressive” s#!+holes like NY.

Also, $13 billion deficit? Wasn’t Cuomo just on national TV saying it’s the red states that are so bad at mismanaging their budget that they drain federal resources?

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
