The Minneapolis City Council on Friday unanimously approved a proposal to change the city charter to allow the police department to be dismantled, following mass public criticism of law enforcement over the killing of George Floyd.
The 12-0 vote is just the first step in a process that faces significant bureaucratic obstacles to make the November ballot, where the city’s voters would have the final say.
And it came amid a spate of recent shootings in Minnesota’s largest city that have heightened many citizens´ concerns about talk of dismantling the department.
This is the first thing that came to mind.
Now, if the officer of Minneapolis PD are so kind and quit in masse tonight, it should make for an interesting weekend. You know goons are gonna come out and attack them, right? Why risk it?

Minneapolis needs to revise the City Charter which currently mentions a real Police Department. The City Council loons said yes to the Department of Violence Prevention and Sparkly Unicorns. The Boy Mayor will veto it and then the Council led by MN AG Keith Ellison’s kid will override the Veto. The City Charter Commission also needs to say yes, and then the City Voters need to say yes in an election.
At the earliest, it will go for a city wide vote in November. Hopefully, the sane* Democrats will slow it down, so it doesn’t go for a vote until 2021.
*(Because there is no credible or functional Republican Party in Minneapolis. Between the rank, ranked choice voting and the liberal same day voting registration, Republicans do not stand a chance.)

It is the responsibility of governors to protect their states, to police their streets. The police power rests at the state level. And we expect mayors to step up and to do their job, and governors to step up and do their job in the mold of President Trump, who secured DC after a night of lawlessness two weeks ago.
Finally, the Defund Police movement is misguided. It will only hurt the vulnerable citizens of American cities the most. It’s sad, and it is shameful.
