And the Bradys wave their flag on the Alec Baldwin incident.

MISFIRE
verb
/ˌmisˈfī(ə)r/

  1. (of a gun or missile) fail to discharge or fire properly.

What happened was a negligent discharge.

What comes next is who is responsible for such negligence.

And yes, Baldwin is a Gun Control Liberal asshole, but unless it is found he was fucking around with the gun and being a participant of the creation of the negligent discharge, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt till the investigation is complete.  He is gonna have enough karma income as it is.

  1. “Celebrities,” aka actors, know guns exist because they, and their co-celebrities, use and see them in movies. But, just like they do not know what’s on the dark side of the moon, they do not know anything about guns. (There are exceptions – I remember a story about Tom Selleck chastising a prop man about muzzling people with a prop gun).

And, places like Ring’s, and a few others, provide guns of varying composition to movie and TV shows for on-set use; most of the guns one sees in holsters and hands there are very accurately reproduced hard rubber likenesses. When a scene calls for a gun to actually fire, however, the mechanical parts have to work.

That said, it strikes me as negligence to allow an actor who knows nearly nothing about guns to possess, and “pretend” to shoot with, a gun that can actually discharge a potentially lethal projectile (blanks, regardless of construction, are lethal up to certain distances – many are constructed with fairly thick cardboard wads, some with hard wax plugs (similar to what the fast Draw competitors use), and some with chalk; and regardless of projectile, or lack of it, the gas volume itself is lethal up to a certain distance – a couple decades back a popular daytime actor joking around with a prop gun containing blanks killed himself with it by shooting hilself in the head).

I would think it prudent for producers and directors to require some amount of firearms training, including safety, for any actor who must manipulate a gun, but that seems to not be the case. I suspect those people have at least as little knowledge of gun safety as the actors (play acting or not, the very idea of pointing any gun or gun-like device (blue guns) at a live human, outside of a self defense or warfare setting, leaves me cold).

Different topic, but it’s time for the “EU Warning” at the bottom of the page to go away, or at least be modified – when enlarging the page to read small print (CTL-scroll) it re-sizes the warning to obscure the entire page. If it has to stay (I’d vote for “screw the euro weenies”), maybe make it a fixed-size footer?

  2. There are only two possibilities: 1 this was a blank firing replica weapon, or 2 this was an actual firearm that was either loaded with blanks or live ammo

If a replica, then why does it fire any sort of projectile? Even wadding? There MUST be a way to make it LOOK like a gunshot without actually being one.

If a real firearm, then was it loaded with blanks, or live rounds? Did Baldwin even check? If not, why not?

What safety precautions were taken? Was the victim in the line of fire? Why? Cameras can be operated remotely.

As the person handling the firearm, it was ultimately the responsibility of the person pulling to trigger to know and understand what he had in his hand.

In any case, the proper place to discover these facts is in front of a jury. The word “verdict” means “truth.” The only proper thing is for Baldwin to be charged with, at the very least, negligent homicide. Let the jury sort it out and decide what the facts were.

That, after all, is what he advocated for.

I just can’t agree with you on this one- they should prosecute this to the FULLEST extent of the law. This is what Alec Baldwin wanted to happen to you- he would not have hesitated to advocate throwing the full force of the law in your direction for even OWNING a firearm.

The only way that the elites will EVER see the light is if they are subject to the same laws and rules as the little people. As long as they are exempted and above the law, they won’t care about how those laws affect the proletariat. I’m through being kind or understanding. Politics in this country have become a winner take all bloodsport, and I intend on being on the winning side.

    1. I look forward to seeing Mr. Baldwin doing time. He pulled the trigger so regardless of what the designated gun handler did he should face the laws he cheers for. Of course California effectively exempts Hollywood from all gun laws including felon in possession.

    2. In SPADES:

“I just can’t agree with you on this one- they should prosecute this to the FULLEST extent of the law. This is what Alec Baldwin wanted to happen to you- he would not have hesitated to advocate throwing the full force of the law in your direction for even OWNING a firearm.

  3. Tyically the guns w set are real and the responsibility of a gun specific prop manager. These guns are prepped and readied by the “firearm expert” and only handed to the actors for the scene then taken back right after where it is readied for the next scene, this gets around the fact many actors can’t possess a firearm. This will require a full investigation but sounds like the gun prop manager effed up, similar to what happened to Brandon Lee filming The Crow. In that case the the prop manager manufactured dummy rounds but forgot to remove the live primer on one resulting in a bullet being stuck in the barrel. A later blank launched the bullet with near full power killing Brandon Lee.

    1. I get that the prop manager is in charge of the prop. However, the person pulling the trigger is still responsible. There are alternatives. The actor could inspect it prior to firing to ensure it is safe. He could have not pointed it at a live person.

As the person pulling the trigger, you can’t pass that responsibility off to someone else.

Your statement is the equivalent of saying “I didn’t know it was loaded. The prop manager told me it wasn’t loaded.” RULE NUMBER ONE

  4. Who was the prop master? Prop guns usually don’t have fully-drilled-out barrels; they’re fancied-up starter pistols or cap guns.

So how did a functional firearm make it onto the set? Seeing as the actors probably aren’t responsible for fetching or preparing the props, who was?

(As an aside, “prop weapon on set replaced with real weapon” is an OLD Hollywood plot-twist trope. Many, many movies and TV shows have done it, from replacing the collapsible-blade prop knife with a real blade right before the stabbing scene is filmed, to loading one live round into a gun that should only have blanks [which is probably why prop guns don’t have drilled-out barrels or are made to not chamber live rounds]. The trope is old enough that some movies subvert it and have the protagonist swap the bad guy’s weapon for a fake! Point is, I can’t believe they don’t take precautions for exactly this situation.)

I’d be digging into who Alec is supposed to be shooting at in the scene and see if anyone wants to harm them.

But definitely find the prop master. And put some pressure on Alec himself, because if he’s allied with Everytown and the Demanding Mommies, he’s obviously a gun safety expert and this should never have happened by accident or negligence, amirite?

(And not gonna lie, the thought of an interrogating officer snidely inserting comments on how Adam Baldwin is an amazing actor, and asking if they’re related, kind of kicks my giggle box.)

  5. OMG!

Baldwin was frustrated at having to shoot another take and pointed the gun at the director and cinematographer, then joked about shooting them and pulled the freaking trigger!!!

    http://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=396133

Read the statement from the Sheriff. Witnesses say:
He Pointed the gun at them and pulled the trigger!!!

    1. I read that “statement” on another blog, and someone said it was fake news. It has the look of a fake. I’ve never seen an official press release use the word “fucking” even in a direct quote. I’d take it with a grain of salt. Or ten.

  6. First rule of firearms…NEVER POINT A GUN AT ANYONE OR ANYTHING!!!!! If this was a camera shot without a target in frame the Armorer should have ensured that there was no one in the line of fire before they began action.

Baldwin is the producer of this movie. he is in over control and is responsible for everything. This includes the Armorer who is responsible for the safe use of weapons on set. Ultimately he has to own this tragedy whether he wants to or not.

If Baldwin was fiddling around with this firearm before a scene he is guilty of murder. You cannot assume a gun is safe just because it is a ‘prop’.

The fallout from this will be very interesting to follow and since the incident occurred in Arizona it is possible Baldwin will be charged.

    1. New Mexico, so not CA but not quite AZ either.
An obvious observation is that anti-gun activists are almost always ignorant, and often militantly ignorant. So for him to violate gun safety rules is to be expected, it comes with his gun hating mindset. Which of course does not excuse the outcome at all.
Some of the Twitter comments are interesting. A number of them absolve Baldwin and say it’s exclusively the prop master’s fault. While I agree he’s partly to blame, by Col. Cooper’s four rules he who pulls the trigger carries the main responsibility.
The more bizarre comments are the ones that postulate Baldwin was given a loaded gun deliberately. With the exception of the nutcase quoted in another post here, those comments offer no reason why anyone might do such a thing.

  7. He cocked it
    Pointed it
    Pulled the trigger
    Without checking the cylinder

Shit,if I pick up a gun, step ONE, I check it
And even IF it is safe
I’m not aiming it at anyone.
Why is there not a safety meeting on every set where guns are used?
Why are the Hollywood people so ignorant?

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
