More info via UK’s Daily Mail. The gun appears to be a small caliber Beretta of very close clone. My educated guess is that the shooter forgot to disengage the safety. Security was non-existent so I am guessing that this kind of things are not common in Bulgaria.

The gun was actually a pepper gas device. Still, close range hits with them can cause some big damage.

I did a quick search and the Knall 8mm looks a lot like the pistol in the video. Drawing that thing will get you killed in this side of the ocean.
It looked and sounded to me like he racked the slide, repeatedly. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that he was unfamiliar with the operation of the Beretta and failed to load the tip up barrel. I loved the ass beating.
