I went to a pawn and gun store.
I was unimpressed with the store, prices were way too high. Especially on anything used that someone might sort of maybe think about considering having some collector’s value, was priced like it was starting at Rock Island Auction.
So I’m ready to leave when I hear the typical guttural, low IQ accent of the born-and-raised resident of York City.
That has become a common sound around here.
Then I hear what this guy is saying to the pawn people.
He is retired NYPD and has his “HR 218 Federal Gun Permit” and that means he can buy a gun. He doesn’t have his North Carolina handgun purchase permit but he sure has his “HR 218 Federal Gun Permit.”
He didn’t take kindly to being told no, retorting with “I was NYPD for 20 years.”
If I ran a gun shop and someone came in wanting to buy a pistol and told me they were NYPD for 20 years I’d straight up tell them no.
“I’m not selling you a gun because you have no idea how to use it and are more of a danger with it to innocent people than most criminals are. You numb-nuts, brain dead, Jackboot, morons had to be given 12 lbs trigger springs for your Glocks because your department couldn’t train the boomer Fudds who started when revolvers were your duty guns to keep their fucking fingers off the triggers and you kept accidentally discharging your weapons into bystanders.”
Also the fact that this guy thought that North Carolina state law didn’t apply to him because he has a “HR 218 Federal Gun Permit” and “was NYPD for 20 years,” was just everything that sucks about New York City moving south.
I was once told that the New Yorkers who live in North Cackalacky are referred to as “Half-Backs” because they first move to Florida, and then move halfway back when they miss New York and wind up in NC.
Most guys carrying with a “HR 218 Federal Gun Permit” don’t know they have to still qualify yearly and carry proof with them from a certified source.
And of course, the gun store has every right to refuse to sell to him simply because he’s a blowhard asshole.
The proof of my annual certified 218 qualification is tucked next to my retired LEO photo id, and next to those cards is my liability insurance card.
I’m under no illusions that possessing that status would allow me to buy a pistol in North Carolina.
“Yankee go home ” is still a refrain a hundred years later.
OK, what IS an HR218, for those of us who don’t speak federalese?
Also known as LEOSA, it’s the Law Enforcement Officers’ Safety Act of 2004.
Basically, it’s a federal authorization for current and retired LEOs to carry concealed in all 50 states, regardless of what the individual states would normally allow or require.
(Bring this up next time anyone argues against nationwide CCW. Fact is, there’s already nationwide CCW; it just only applies to current and retired LEOs.)
But as our intrepid former NYPD just discovered, it only covers carrying a handgun. It does nothing about purchasing one. State laws still apply there, including NC “pistol purchase permits”.

Don’t forget about how many NYPD pistols had to come back into the armory for “servicing” because all the internals were covered in rust. As it turns out, the department that doesn’t train its officers how to shoot their guns, ALSO doesn’t train its officers on how to maintain their guns. Many officers left it in the holster, magazine inserted, for months on end, rain or shine. If they were needed, a lot of those guns probably wouldn’t fire.
No gun should be treated like that. Not even a Glock.
Meanwhile, here in the “Pacific NorthWET”, I’m wiping down and re-lubing my carry gun once or twice every week, to make damn sure it doesn’t rust in the humidity.
“I was NYPD for 20 years.”
My response: “Great. That and 6 bucks will buy you a latte. But since you were NYPD, you should already know that I’m not required to sell you anything or even give you the time of day, and if you don’t calm down and leave now, you should already know what happens to trespassers. There’s the door; don’t let it hit you in the ass on your way out.”
That wall should have been built just south of Richmond VA.

First off as a born and raised Brooklyn native, fuck you and your ignorant comments about natives of NYC. I are a high school graduate!
Saying that, as retired federal corrections officer (24 years after 13+ in army infantry) I got my state “concealed carry permit” (which is required on your state requirements) thanks to LEOSA (probably what he was referring to) . It ONLY says you’re qualified to carry nation wide. It does NOT exempt you from ANY purchase requirements which can legally happen only in your home state anyway.(direct transfer of a pistol I mean)
I’m no fan of NYPD’s firearms skills. (I’d say that about MOST agencies too)
Most cops country wide have little clue about gun laws I’d say. Machine guns are legal in most states and most Americans are completely unaware.
Your stance on NYPD is anti police whether you think so or not.

North Carolina requires a permit for purchase? I thought they were at least marginally free.
The Permit to Purchase issued by the local sheriff is a remnant of the not so good ole days of Jim Crow and the Democrat’s denial of firearm rights to blacks and others.
The NC legislature tried to repeal it.
Yet Blacks continue to support the Democrat party in NC, although many of the local pols are of the same mentally, if less vocal, than the segregationists of the sixties.
