I get that the .Gov does not want bad weapons or fully auto out there, but to settle for scrap metal prices what could bring some better prices in the open market in regards of pieces like flash suppressors, stocks, pistol grips, hand-guards, etc is just fiscal irresponsibility.

I may spend a good portion of my day destroying guns and gun parts, but I know they are broken or out of spec parts. This kind of waste just breaks my heart and brings a tear to my eye.
Heck, the complete upper — minus the charging handle and BCG — is probably worth $400-500 alone. More with them. Or they could sell them separately. “Parted out”, they could probably turn a profit selling everything but the FCG, or break even if they opted to destroy the lower.
But no, they’d rather spend more than the gun is worth destroying it, rather than see any part of it go to we unwashed masses.
It’s like the “decommissioned” brass casings from a while back; they were shredding them and selling it as scrap (at tremendous expense), instead of selling it on the open market as once-fired brass (which might actually recoup costs), perfectly good for hand-loading.
Do not underestimate the lengths the powers-that-be will go to, or the expenses they’ll endure (not that they pay the bills anyway), to keep functioning firearm hardware out of civilian hands.
