2. Some minor Googling, and: That tank is on display in the middle of Bastogne. The hole seen next to its name was from a German 75mm anti-tank gun, a shot that wounded — eventually killing — the tank commander. Two other crew were wounded, and were captured by the Germans along with the rest of the crew.

   The driver and hull machine gunner were Jewish; while they were sent to a POW camp, they were not treated as POWs and were heavily worked and nearly starved to death.

   The tank’s hulk was bought by the Bastogne Commissioner of Tourism in 1946 and was restored — leaving the battle damage in place — and placed in the town square in 1948 as a memorial to the 3rd Army’s relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
