The gunman shot dead by cops after opening fire on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Sunday had a long rap sheet that included an attempted murder bust, according to records and sources.
Luis Vasquez, 52, was arrested on the Upper West Side for attempted murder in 1990, and on an assault charge there a year earlier, sources said Monday.
Vasquez, of the Bronx, was also hit with a drug sale charge in 1989, as well as a marijuana charge in the Bronx in 2012 and a turnstile-jumping offense in 2007.

He has a “lengthy criminal history,” including attempted murder, felony weapons charges, multiple drug dealing convictions, and for shooting at cops at least once before, meaning that it is illegal for him to own a gun under Federal law, as well as NY law. He was an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic, meaning it was double illegal under Federal law for him to possess a gun or ammo.
It is illegal to own a gun in NYC without a permit to own. It is illegal to carry a gun in NYC without a permit to carry. Semiauto firearms that hold more than 8 rounds are illegal in NY.
So tell me exactly what gun laws would have changed anything. Shooting him in the face is the only thing that seems like it will work to stop this one man crime spree.
Impressive considering that the NYPD has what’s called the “NY Trigger” on their Glocks… part and parcel of the reason for -so many- random rounds and innocents hit during NYPD Shootouts is that the trigger pull on their Glocks…NY1, was an eight pound (8) pull… the newer version NY2, is a hefty eleven pound (11) pull! It takes MAD strength to pull that under -nonstress- conditions, and it’s the reason that when they do start blazing away, rounds go helter-skelter as the trigger pull is ginormous! Jacks the aimpoint all OVER the fuggin’ place… So, for old boy to “X” Ring said perp, thats even more impressive, esp. if’n he was running an NY2 trigger…
