I’m in Sydney. Yes, NSW & VIC are in lockdown. Yes it sucks!! But for god’s sake no one “is banning people from going outside entirely”. That’s complete ?. There’s a curfew from 9pm-5am in Vic & parts of Sydney. That’s it. Still bloody awful I know.

The curfew is stupid, but it’s winter in Australia — sunset is WAY earlier than 9pm.
When did the entire medical world forget that respiratory viruses all have the exact same patterns of infection and mutation, and that nothing short of a sealed containment lab environment can stop them from doing what they do? Doesn’t New Zealand prove that point? Even after the most extreme lockdown and isolation measures imaginable, in a place that is one of few on Earth remote and self-contained enough to take the total isolation route, the virus still got in! And this isn’t the first time. All they can do is delay the inevitable.
What the hell is the point of a curfew in this situation? We’re going to restrict the hours you can be outside so that everyone who does have to be out will all be out together at the same time. This will somehow prevent the spread of a communicable illness.
