Saw this in the Book of Feces. The damned quote never dies apparently.

I have no idea how many times I have typed “Fake Quote” since the Clinton administration, specially regarding this made up crap. It is not that there isn’t a true quote from Hitler regarding civilian gun ownership. From The JPFO FAQ Page:

Der größte Unsinn, den man in den besetzen Ostgebieten machen könnte, sei der, den unterworfenen Völkern Waffen zu geben. Die Geschichte lehre, daß alle Herrenvölker untergegangen seien, nachdem sie den von ihnen unterworfenen Volkern Waffen bewilligt hatten.

[The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.]
— Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), April 11, 1942, quoted in Hitlers Tischegesprache Im Fuhrerhauptquartier 1941-1942. [Hitler’s Table-Talk at the Fuhrer’s Headquarters 1941-1942], Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaum-Verlag, Bonn, 1951)

Back in the era of the Usenet and Newsgroups, a sure sign that somebody was a newbie was the use of the fake quote, specially in their signature. He/she usually got properly corrected and the sources for the correction and real quote given.  But if you try now via a search engine, the only thing you get is returns from Politifact and Snopes chiding gun owners as liars. Anything going that far back exists, bit you won’t get to see it unless you know where to look or specially know who to ask…. We The “Fudds.”

I think it was Patton who said something about not paying twice for the same real estate.  The Gun Culture 3.0 does not need to make the same mistakes because we already made them and they can save the time by simply not by paying a modicum of attention to what we have to share with you.

Or you can go along and keep eating the political Tide Pods.

  1. Thank you for this post. The mis quote has always struck me as kinda not right. Just been too lazy to research it. The fight isnt won by platitudes…..

  2. Then again, it’s sometimes surprising what quotes you can find that are real. Three I like because are from Gandhi (authenticated by published sources):
“Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest.”
“I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence.”
“He who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honor by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully.”
About the Hitler non-quote: he was probably well aware that it wasn’t the first time in history; I’ve seen some good arguments that the Turks getting away with their genocide of Armenians supported Hitler’s expectation to get away with his. And the Turks too started with gun registration, of course — followed by confiscation.

  3. Hitler didn’t need to pass much in the way of gun control. He had the Weimar gun registries, and that was all she wrote at that point. Everyone not in good standing with the Nazi party got disarmed (Jews, especially, but everyone).

He later loosened them, but only for the benefit of, again, members of the Nazi party in good standing.

Only one rule: Don't be a dick.
