A lesson in perverse incentives – LA Jail edition

From CNN:

Inmates at one California jail tried to infect themselves with coronavirus, Los Angeles Sheriff says

Inmates at a Los Angeles County correctional facility drank from the same cup with the purpose of infecting one another, resulting in 21 cases of coronavirus, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

The inmates at North County Correctional Facility in Castaic are seen on surveillance video crowding the hot water dispenser, sipping the water, and also “sniffing” out of a common mask, according to Villanueva.
“It is very disturbing to think that people would do this to themselves deliberately in an attempt to force our hand to release more people from custody,” the sheriff said at a press conference on Monday.

The news comes almost two months after Los Angeles County released some inmates early and reduced the number of arrests in the county due to coronavirus concerns.

I think this qualifies as a “no fucking shit Sherlock” scenario.

California politicians make a big deal about releasing inmates over Coronavirus concerns, inmates get it into their heads that Coronavirus is a “get out of jail free” card, so they deliberately infect themselves to get released.

It doesn’t take a Ph.D. in sociology to figure that out.  Actually, I’m pretty sure that a Ph.D. in sociology would never figure that out because it is a basic application of common sense.

Welcome to what economics call “perverse incentive.”  It bites you in the ass every time.

Florida Grim Reaper collecting funds to buy body bags. UPDATE

J. Kb’s favorite lawyer is at it again., this time wants other fools to send him money so he can buy body bags and give them away during his walks on the beaches of our Sunshine State in the  idea that he will scare people into quarantining again.

He had some supporters in twitter, but I have to say the majority of people took it to him with assorted fire devices.

It would be a sweet irony that Mr. Uhlfelder would have a sun stroke, taken to the local ER only to find out he is infected with Wuhan V.  and his approaching people was an irresponsible thing to do.

Pray to the gods of Karma and Schadenfreude.

UPDATE: Reader Ryan C in Facebook oriented us to this video.  Is he our Reaper”? Maybe, maybe not.

Some people just need killing – Queens mom and boyfriend edition

I saw Miguel’s last post and it reminded me of a story from a couple of days ago.

Cruel couple allegedly abandoned 6-year-old girl on busy NYC street

A heartless Long Island mom and her boyfriend allegedly abandoned her terrified 6-year-old daughter on a crowded Queens street, tossed garbage bags with the girl’s clothes out the window and drove off, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Patrice Chambers, 29, and Mark Pamphile, 28, are accused of forcing the child from her mom’s Nissan Altima at the intersection of 140th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard in Laureltown at 11:25 a.m. on Monday.

Minutes earlier, Pamphile called the girl’s father, who lives nearby, and allegedly told him in a voicemail, “You better come get your daughter…she is crying like a little b—h,” a criminal complaint charges.

Pamphile called back and allegedly left another message threatening to leave the girl on the street if her father didn’t send him $200, the papers say.

Shortly after Pamphile left the voicemails, Chambers, who was behind the wheel, allegedly ordered her daughter to exit the passenger side door then tossed several plastic garbage bags with the child’s belongings out the driver’s side window.

As the car sped away, the frightened child was captured on surveillance video running into the street to pick up the bags and loose items of clothing that had fallen out.

The boyfriend throws away a little girl and the mom helps.  That’s the part that really floors me, that the mom participated in this.  As a father I can’t imagine deliberately putting my child in harm’s way, and this mom did because the girl was crying.

There are some truly evil people in this world.  These are two of them.

Also, I just want to toss this point into the ether:

Miguel’s post was about a mother who drowned her son, mine is about a mother who abandoned her daughter on in an intersection in NYC.

I hear all the times about how “if there were more women in power” or “if there were more female leaders” or “if women ran the world” how we’de usher in an era of peaceful utopia.  It seems to me that women are just as capable as men as monstrous evil that harms the weakest amongst us.  I never seem to hear anything about that.

Some People Just Need Killing. Mommy Dearest Version.

If you are from South Florida, you my have heard about the Amber Alert last week where an autistic boy was missing and then was found dead, drowned in a canal. Not 12 hours later, mom was charged with murder.

Video of the first attempt has been found.

I still hold my belief against lynching, but I’ll more than happy to push the syringes’ plungers at Raford when her time comes.

Florida now has TWO Narratives about the Wuhan Virus.

Our local media has now settled into two distinct narratives when it comes as why Florida is not showing the disaster number of deaths that the North East has suffered as apparently one is not enough.. They are as creative as “the dog ate my homework” and ” Grandma died and I need to take the month of… no, this one is a different grandma.”

Narrative #1 : The statistics are fake!

“Stop hiding true COVID-19 stats, Gov. DeSantis. Our lives are still at risk | Opinion” by the Miami Herald Editorial Board

You guys know this one already. The Media latched on the spiteful email of a rightfully fired Department of Health employee and created this pretty narrative that spread like wildfire without one iota of evidence. Even though the credibility of Ms. Jones has proven as low as the price to a ticket to the Wuhan Province, the false accusation is still bouncing around the political faithful.

But the disclosing that Dr. Rebekah Jones’ criminal behavior put a big dent in the credibility of her defenders, so another Narrative was needed with urgency. Enter the Sun Sentinel:

Narrative #2: We were lucky!

Luck allowed Florida — so far — to avoid the worst of COVID-19 pandemic | Fred Grim

Oh yes, we were lucky for whatever unknown reason that we are not piling up bodies, but nothing has to do with a smart campaign of protective measures.  I particularly like this little fragment in Grimm’s rant

DeSantis can talk about what he didn’t do back when other governors were adopting “draconian orders,” but he has yet to explain the magic formula he employed that enabled Florida to do better.

DeSantis was smart in two ways. The first one was exactly that he did not engage in Little Dictator tactics that would have risen an immediate rejection by the people, specially South Florida. Instead, he was the folksy buddy that told you, “You know? Just in case we better do this.” It is the same tone we use when we see a hurricane forming in the Atlantic and we figure we best be getting ready and putting the shutters up. If he had gone Democrat Dictator, the Media would have had a field day accusing him of being a Gringo Castro. Instead, he let the Mayors do their thing according to each’s locale and people responded voluntarily.

The second reason why we had such a low body count is very much important and it is suspicious that Grimm does not mention it: Strict guidelines on how nursing homes were to be run and the elderly cared for. DeSantis ordered all visits to nursing homes suspended, personnel and residents checked out and sent equipment and National Guard medical personnel to check and improve where necessary how the nursing homes were to operate during the pandemic. An specially, no contaminating nursing homes by forcing them to take on sick patients like His Highness King Cuomo did.  That led that Florida, with the biggest number of nursing homes and assisted living facilities and the biggest elderly population, had the lowest percentage of elderly deaths in the nation. How come Grimm did not mention our elderly? Probably because the effing abuelitos not dying screwed with his political pitch.

Hey, never let the facts get in the way of a South Florida Newspaper work for the Democratic Party… and for free!

As Catholic, I need to ask…

… what kind of fresh round of pepperjack bullshit is this? Because sure as hell it is not a baptism according Catholic tradition.

If you cannot perform the baptism because restrictions, then frigging wait or get a priest that will hold the ceremony like it is supposed to. In the Catholic faith, Baptisms are too important to be screwing around with. They “wash away”  the Original Sin and makes the baby a member of the faith. You are literally anointed with oil and given a small pinch of salt as part of the ceremony to represent Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
It also gives the baby the godparents, the ones that are supposed to step up and care for the needs of the child in case something happen to the parents, they will act as guides and spiritual counselors.

This is a fucking mockery.
