My favorite redhead of all times as the top honcho of a federation Starship? It is so perfect I cannot do but smile big and wish I could get a copy framed for my wall.
Lucille Ball was the owner of a TV production company the youngins may not have heard about: Desilu. Back in the early 60s, they decided to produce a Sci Fi TV show which would transform the genre forever even though it did not fare well the first go around. You may have seen tis closing credit once or twice.
Gene Roddenberry may have created, but she built it
My theory is that Kirk’s womanizing was a play for Desi’s support.
There’s an interesting alt-history web story called ‘That Wacky Redhead!’, which approaches things from a pop culture angle rather than the usual political/military one.
Namely, what if Lucille Ball, on the advice of her departed friend Carole Lombard (to whom she credited a lot of her better decisions), never sold Desilu to Gulf+Western?

What I’ve always found fascinating about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is that during the time they were married (1940–1960) there were many people in the country who were scandalized by such a prominent celebrity couple being interracial. Not because of Arnaz, but because of Ball!
There were constant rumors that she was gasp IRISH!
Which meant that she wasn’t “white” and Cuban-born and Spaniard-descended Arnaz was “white.”
Because “race” is a stupid make-believe concept that only stupid people believe in.
I don’t know which I like better, the post or Ish’s comment!
I remember seeing the last image, with the alien and Desilu ID, but putting Lucy on a starship bridge is Genius.
