I want to go the non-shotgun way.

Screw it. It is not like I have the spare cash to spend. And I need to start saving for the Web Host bill coming up due next year.

With luck I may hit a rebate or some stuff. Or maybe rent one or all  of the three spaces I have available for other sites. Does  $100 a year for three years sounds about right for a WordPress site?

PS: A couple of people have asked why so expensive. The plan I have besides the ability to host 5 sites, also gives me unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage.  When I had to switch a couple of years ago, it was because the limits of my old plan was being overrun by the number of visitors. Back them we are beginning to pass the 2,000 visitors daily. And they were also warning me my storage was reaching the limit allowed. They had an offer ($700 something IIRC) for an upgrade to a “WordPress Optimized” account and since a WordPress blog is the only thing I wanted to do, it fit me fine.  So yes, there are cheaper plans, but I have been reading the small print and eventually you reach a limit somewhere and you get spanked.  We had days with a sudden burst of 30K visits (very unusual but happens) and I had no complains from HostGator. So I am keeping this plan.

  1. $100 a year for three years sounds about right for a WordPress site?

I don’t know, still use the free one since I only get a few visitors a week. Sucks not being able to add graphic (just links) but for now it will have to do. That shotgun looks pretty sweet, however.

    1. My plan comes with unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage. When I broke the 2K a day for visitors with my old plan, I got chastised and apparently I was also about to reach my storage limit too.
It took a bit of trouble to get 7 years properly migrated (I think about 2 weeks of fuck ups and I lost about half the readers) but now all seems to be running smoothly and other than when they upgrade servers, I had no complains.

  2. What host do you use? I wonder how the costs would compare versus NearlyFreeSpeech.net or some other host?

    1. I am using HostGator and other the migration problems I had when I upgraded, I reluctantly admit it has bee trouble free for 2+ years

  3. I run a web hosting company (very small) and at this point I’d say you would be best to stick with hostgater. Your traffic and size aren’t that big in the grand scheme of things but you have a high profile site which means it is targeted so the host and service must be hardened.

If I was quoting you it would be more on the order of $50/month.

    Good luck to you.
