I beg your pardon?

The Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home will offer alkaline hydrolysis, one of a wave of new green burial options. The process is also known as bio-cremation or flameless cremation.

A body is placed in a pressurized drum that holds up to 400 gallons of water. A chemical is added and heated to 350 degrees, then the mixture is circulated through the drum. The body’s soft tissue is dissolved into a liquid, which is washed into the municipal wastewater system.

“Kids, hurry up! We need to get to the funeral home before they flush grandpa!”

  1. Sewage treatment plants just “love” getting spikes of caustic.
It is not so bad for large plants, but when a smaller plant gets a dose that is out of the typical norms it can cause problems. It just messes up the process.

  2. OMG, all I can think of is it not being sent into the sewer system, like “Soylent Green”…ew and yuckie!
