Back again with the “unarmed person not being a dangerous person” fallacy.

One of the bouncers who appears in a viral video of a brawl outside a Fort Lauderdale beachfront bar a week ago has been arrested and charged with felony battery.

Arnald Thomas-Darrah, 30, was arrested Sunday by Fort Lauderdale police at his Oakland Park home after he and the other bouncers were identified by one of the victims.

Police said Alexander Coelho, 29, contacted them Friday and provided a full report of the July 28 incident at the Dirty Blondes bar, 229 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., and filed a police report on Saturday.

Right at the end of the fight, police was contacted and Alexander Coelho was arrested:

Fort Lauderdale police officers who arrived after the brawl asked Coelho and Parker to calm down and explain what had happened. The two didn’t initially comply, and were arrested and charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Coelho was also charged with battery on a law-enforcement officer. Both bonded out of jail.

And here is the booking photo of Coelho:

Coelho1Coelho was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he received six stitches over his right eye and several over his left eye, the police report said.

I don’t see in the video any overt action from the victims that provoked the attack. But setting that aside, do notice the speed and violence that was used and the damaged it caused with out the presence of a weapon of any type.

As in the post Why would anybody shoot unarmed teens? we see again the importance of not falling to the ground during an attack. Not that the victim had much of a choice since he tripped over a chair and a rope cordoning off a small area, but that also bring the importance of being aware of your surroundings and, if you fall to go immediately for a fetal position and covering your head. The bouncer went from punch to stomping, elevating the level of possible damage and people have been killed by stomping.
In the gut level, I hope the bar gets sued out of existence. To hire goons like that as “security” is not what a smart business person do.

  1. […] So MAIG is endorsing the “proportional force” standard, generally employed in countries where self-defense is effectively unlawful. Be a man! He pulls a knife, you fight him with a knife. He pulls a baseball bat, well, do some grappling and hope you don’t get your skull bashed in. Fortunately, proportional force is a relatively extremist viewpoint few Americans agree with, and this is a big reason why. […]
