“It was the Dawn of the Third Age of Mankind, ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. The Babylon Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It’s a port of call, home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs and wanderers. Humans and aliens wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal .. all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it’s our last, best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.”
Babylon 5, Season One Intro.
“Summoned, I come. In Valen’s name I take the place that has been prepared for me. I’m Grey. I stand between the candle and the star. We are Grey. We stand between the darkness .. and the light.”
-Delenn in Grey Council in Babylon 5:”Babylon Squared”
If you wonder why, it is just because no matter what the Firefly freaks say, B5 will always be the best. 😛
EndTrans
Amen to that.
Only because it ran its full five seasons. (And at least one of those was pretty weak.) Had Firefly gone five seasons, I think you’d be singing a different tune.
One of the great series of history, I’d say.
Season 5 was weak only because the network screwed things up by letting the renewal hang for so long that JMS had to wrap up the primary storylines in season 4, which didn’t leave much usable plot for the final season. Season 4 suffered a little bit from this too, coming across as being a bit rushed.
The most interesting part is how he had multiple “escape” stories pre-made for each character, just in case the actor decided to leave. The most prominent one that got used was for Talia.
Kevin…. Firefly is nothing more than a second hand Vorlon ship! It doesn’t even rate a CarFax! 😛
Be careful about what you say in regards to Vorlon ships. because they’re very emotional. In fact they usually fly themselves into the sun if their pilot dies.
But they sing while you go in stasis. How cool is that?
Hell yeah! And let us not forget, “Ivanova is God.” Was a great show and spent many bleary-eyed Saturday nights staying up to watch it back in high school.
“Who am I? I am Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sophie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is going to kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth … I am Death incarnate, and the last living thing that you are ever going to see. God sent me.”
Still gives me chills
Ivonova was easily one of the best characters on the show. I also enjoyed her “Ivanova is always right” speech she gave the scientists that tried going to down Epsilon 3 without permission.
One of these days, I need to sit down and watch all of the ’90’s and 2000’s SF that I missed. I saw maybe one or two episodes each of DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and Babylon 5.
Firefly to me was…okay. But besides Japanese anime, my childhood was fleeting glances of old Battlestar and of Babylon 5. and one episode of Babylon 5 was worth its weight in gold. Firefly tries to gain that sense of awe for me, but it never caught on as it had in my little circle of nerds.
If given the chance, I’d probably snatch up all of B5 and not be seen for days either online or outside while I marathon the series.
I tried a few times to get into B5, but couldn’t. I heard so many good things….but I couldn’t watch it during its initial run because it came on a non-ABC station, and we were about 60 miles from everything but ABC at the time, so the antenna didn’t pick ’em up most of the time.
Daddybear: DEFINITELY watch Deep Space 9. The best of the Treks by far.
“I am Mother, I am Father” — a chilling episode, especially at the end.
Oh, and what’s YOUR P-rating?
Minus 12… absent minded like you wouldn’t believe!
“No boom today. Boom tomorrow. Always boom tomorrow.”
And speaking as someone whose coat is a little on the brownish side, you will get no disagreement from me.
A line I first heard from B5: “If you cannot say what you mean; you cannot mean what you say.”
Vir’s respond to Mr Morden was also a priceless moment. “…and I’ll wave, like this. “
