I like Ollie. I liked him since I saw the Iran Contra hearings while I was still living in Venezuela. For the life of me I could not understand why was he being vilified for trying to rescue US citizens from the grasp of the Iranians and why did the US Congress not only did not give a shit about kidnapped Americans but made it almost impossible to rescue them. Hey, I was naïve at the ways and politics of Congress back then and even had a somewhat favorable opinion of Jimmy Carter.

But apparently some in our side do not like Col. North because of “bad optics and that the Opposition will use his past to degrade us. I have news for you Bubba: no matter who we elect, he or she is going to be vilified and us alongside. We can elect Jesus Christ himself to be President of the NRA and the Democrats and the Media will hate him, accuse him of trying to overthrow the Roman Empire, subvert Judaism, make wine without a license and distribute suspicious fish and baked goods. And don’t forget, you have seen me talking about good optics here before, but we have progressed to the fact that we do not need a tamed/vanilla spokesperson for the NRA but somebody with command and respect.

We could have elected David Hogg. I am sure the media would like him as president of the NRA and you would have your “great optics” too.

Nah.

  1. David Hogg as NRA president would be delicious … all the flames and no real power to do anything. 🙂

  2. To be fair, does the NRA President really do all that much? In the past the past few years, we’ve had Brownell, Cors, and I can’t remember the guy before that. It seems that LaPierre is the guy pulling the strings. I don’t have an issue with Wayne, and while I think there are things he could do better, do we imagine Ollie North is going to really change anything? Not being snarky or rhetorical, I’m seriously wondering.

    1. Sandra Froman (2005–07) is the last NRA President whom I can recall who took much of an active role. Most of them have been more interested in the administrative side of things and let LaPierre handle the activism.

I’m neutral on Col. North. I’d have preferred someone younger though, all things being equal, North is 74 years old… But I guess Nikki Haley is busy. ?

    2. If I recall the bylaws properly (it’s been a while since I reviewed them), in the NRA the executive VP position (WLP’s) has almost all of the real power. The president is mostly ceremonial.

  3. Younger generation — yes, that would be good. I can think of a number of excellent ones: Colion Noir, Maj Toure, and Dana Loesch come to mind. And not yet but in the future: Kyle Kashuv.

    1. I agree they are great people, but they are only known within the NRA except Dana who is known among Moms Demand.
My gist is that Dana should take a bigger role and appear more in the media. That is what the NRA should be aiming to so she becomes honcho eventually.
