  1. I guess if range is the criteria, we need to ban .22 rifles. Back in the day boxes of .22s uses to carry a warning that the range was over one mile.

    1. I suppose it depends on what you mean by “effective range”. One of my old gun books discusses the danger from rounds going astray. It mentions a case long ago, where a wildly fired 22 short traveled 600 yards or so, striking a teenager in the abdomen. He subsequently died from that injury, probably more because it got infected than because of the magnitude of the damage.
So if “effective range” means “someone could be injured at that distance” it seems correct and if anything conservative. A more reasonable use of the term would be to say “it can be used to reliably hit a target at this distance”. By that definition he’s over by, what, a factor of three?

      1. “The effective range of a particular firearm and cartridge, also known as the maximum effective range, is an average of how far the bullet will travel before it hits the dirt and the actual practical range it can be used at to engage a target. To put it bluntly, it is the range where you can shoot and expect to hit what you’re aiming at with the bullet having enough punch to do the job. ”

Under your train of thought, you agree with Hogg that the effective range of a 5.56 is 1,500 meters.

        1. Miguel,

I like the quote: “To put it bluntly, it is the range where you can shoot and expect to hit what you’re aiming at.”

It takes a lot of skill and the right rifle and cartridge to hit something accurately at 1000 yards. I have some friends who do that, and they spend a lot of money on rifles, scopes, and ammo. And that’s only a paltry 914.4 meters.

Needless to say, they don’t use AR-15’s with 5.56mm ammo.

  2. I love it when ignoramuses try to “school” us regarding weapons and equipment.
They are almost always dead wrong.

I wish they would crawl back into their pajamas and play video games without stopping to bother us.
