SB 108  – Regulation of Concealed Weapons Licenses. Click here for the text of the bill.

The bill aims to transfer the Concealed Weapons licensing program to the  Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to the Department of Law
Enforcement.  Other that what seems to be a straight forward change of oversight. I remember reading that this change comes after we elected a pothead for Commissioner of Agriculture and since the writing in the wall seems to be that Florida will sooner rather than later become Colorado, it would be the smart thing to switch the CWP to Law Enforcement rather than a  department that will probably be run by Liberals from now on.

The one part I was worried about was the money.  As you all know, the monies collected by the issuance of permits and renewals cannot be used for anything else but CWP. Several years ago there was an attempt to transfer those funds to the general coffers, but it was fought by the NRA and won. Shortly after the upgrade of all the computers and upgrade to fingerprint scanners began and we now have waiting times that are way short than the three months’ limit. This bill keeps the budgetary independence of the program so in that sense we can breathe easier. Still, bills do not remain untouched, so I will keep an eye on it.

Vacation is over, folks!

  1. Two dems are the ones who introduced it. Makes me wonder if their going to use Law Enforcement to block CWLs as their not accountable to an electorate.
