Growing up in the deep south Georgia, near the South Carolina border. I know about gators. The departed-mother had a pond(okay, swamp) was full of them. As a kid, dad wouldn’t let me go fishing down there for catfish and brim without a shotgun.
The issue with South Florida is that they are almost part of the urban conclave. Gators don’t mind sharing the space with us humans and that brings funny and not so funny situations. When I was just moved to Miami, I am stuck in traffic in Ockechoobe Road near Hialeah. There is a canal/river that runs parallel to the road and I happen to glance to it and saw a big ugly gator just as pretty please swimming down . I remember that I thought first “WTF” in surprise and then I got mad because the damn reptile was moving faster than the traffic.
