Behold! The Mossberg 464 SPX lever-action rifle.
There is no denying: The gun is ugly. It is not only ugly but Helen Thomas wearing a string bikini and giving you a lap dance kind of ugly.
No gun has managed to insult the sensibilities of so many so quick. The AR Tactical Tommies are screaming bloody murder and tearing their Under Armor Coyote Tan shirts (Rails? Muzzle brake? ZOMG!) while the Classic Rifle Crowd is demanding the heads of Mossberg Management and trying to channel the spirit of John Wayne to exact his wrath on the rest of the company.
Yet… I think it is one of the most sensible guns ever. All of the sudden you have a rifle that can be configured both for hunting and/or self-defense in a round that is proven to be effective on living creatures bigger than poodles. And a collapsible stock means people of different body shapes & sizes can use the rifle comfortably to either bring a buck or a bad guy. If the retail price remains in the $500s, this would make a great home long gun to have.
I think this is a win any way you look at it. But just in case look at it as a mother would to her ugly child.
PS: Be ready for the tactical upgrade aftermarket parts for lever action rifles flood that is sure to come.
UPDATE: Alcalde in the comments could have not said it better:
” It fills the void for the discerning gentleman who needs an appropriate weapon for his cowboy steampunk escapades”
I don’t think the rails are *that* bad, but rather the stock that really makes it ugly. It looks too skinny or fragile looking, it just seems out of place. If it were just a polymer version of the classic stock it’d look fine IMO.
Agree, it is the stock that makes it downright ugly. The “beauty” on this one is the adaptability.
If it was a gun just for me, I’d too go for polymer stock. But I wouldn’t mind having this gun for me and the petite wife who makes my life ever so sweet.
(Butt Kissing Campaign to allow me to buy this rifle in full effect)
If this abomination remains close to the retail price… it will be mine.
I *am* curious though as to whether or not the telescoping part of the stock is removable. I didn’t see any bolts or screws in any larger google images of the thing, but I would be absolutely delighted to walk into my friend’s mancave and whip out a shoulder stock-less 464… and attempt to flip cock it!
And you’d probably be in violation of Federal law in the process. Minimum overall length.
I think there’s an upper and lower tang judging from the picture there, if so the screws wouldn’t be visible from the sides.
This is REAL!!? First time I saw it I thought it was a goof like the HoMeBoY Glock sights.

Maybe the WTF gun, but I want.
Helen Thomas in a string bikini giving me a lap dance? Thank you EVER so much for that mental image Miguel! Dear merciful gods and I don’t have a single bottle of brain eraser in ANY flavor in the house right now…and I’m in desperate need of one after that. I hate you right now Miguel…and right before I’m fixing to go to bed too…
Serves you right for not updating your emergency supplies. 😛
I can honestly say that after posting here last time. I quit the laptop and tried to forget that.
And now I am reminded. Back to the Playstation 3.
The Helen Thomas comment? 🙂
Ugly?! Are you out of your mind? That thing is awesome! It fills the void for the discerning gentleman who needs an appropriate weapon for his cowboy steampunk escapades. All it needs is a parosoled lady, properly corseted, and a steam powered airship and you’ll be the coolest goth on the block.
Blamshit!
Awesome. This is the inevitable outcome from the now pretty popular tactical levergun courses being run. I’ve done one (impromptu and amongst just me and a few of my gunny friends) and the practical applications of just an everyday lever were obvious. If it catches on I’m guessing Mossberg will come to offer it in a wide variety of calibers from 45LC and up. Make this thing in a pistol caliber and I’ll sign up to buy one today.
I was thinking the same. They come up with one in .357 Magnum and the bank account is gonna get hit. OK, not unless SWMBO gives me the required permission. Let’s do the proper Lotto extension/dream: This Mossy with 2 Coonans as back ups in a El Paso Saddlery #44 belt & 2 holster rig.
