   2. I heard a rumor that there was a design for a close in anti gunboat weapons system that was the 120mm smooth bore gun from the Abrams for knocking out little shit like these boats and the pirate roundabouts. Cheaper than a missile inside and more effective at close range.

      1. The Germans are navalizing one of their mobile artillery pieces by lengthening the barrel and increasing the chamber size just a bit to handle more advanced rounds. We should produce their design as a payback in kind for all the weapon systems that they buy from us. Why re-invent the wheel?

         1. Yep. Launching a million dollar guided missile at what amounts to an old fishing boat with an RPG on it is a waste of money. Inside of 3,000m. A single $5K HEAT round will knock it out of the water with ease.

            I like the Dutch Goalkeeper. Its like the CWIS but uses the 30mm GAU8 from the A-10 and can aim down for sea defenses as well. The CWIS is only for air defense.

            1. I was about to suggest the same thing. A 120 mm round seems way more than is needed. A single GAU-8 round will take out a tank at a couple of miles; it certainly should deal with any small or medium third world Navy craft. Perhaps not quite enough gun for a frigate, though I would think a couple of dozen one-pound bullets through the bridge would change anyone’s attitude.

         1. I agree that an auto cannon is the way to go. 120mm is overkill for those boats, and the rate of fire is too low. 10 rounds a minute?

5. My father reported on one of the issues they had when he deployed on the U.S.S. Long Beach during Vietnam. They had missile systems for surface to air. And missile systems for surface to surface. And some sort of system for anti submarine.

   But if a small craft approached they were reduced to using small arms or running away.

   1. Around that time, the Air Force apparently hated the idea of the (then new) A-10 because it uses an icky old gun, rather than shiny new missiles.
