Pretty interesting stuff. The Elgin Cutlass gun was the first US military weapon to use percussion caps. I would guess that the one you have pictured, you would remove the cylinder to load it.
That makes sense. Unfortunately the photo is not good enough to figure that out. But talking about taking a gun and a knife to a gunfight!
