From what I can see, it is a percussion gun. It has to be fun reloading that thing without losing fingers. Rumor has it that it belonged to Gail Pepin’s great-great-great-great-grandmother 😀

Pretty interesting stuff. The Elgin Cutlass gun was the first US military weapon to use percussion caps. I would guess that the one you have pictured, you would remove the cylinder to load it.
That makes sense. Unfortunately the photo is not good enough to figure that out. But talking about taking a gun and a knife to a gunfight!
