My hate affair with Apple began with their Apple IIe series back in the late 70s when I saw my first one in the only Caracas’ store, went inside to ask for info and I was ignored with disdain by the owner. I’d probably looked like I could not afford it (and back then, very few people could specially a 17-year-old high schooler) but I went on not to be a fan of the company. Back then, the Apple stickers were a great deal and I was seen as crazy when a I would reject them.
When IBM enters the Personal Computer market, Apple responds with the McIntosh. I was already in College and I was just looking at computers without having a true interest in one since I was using the college’s mainframe to do stuff for free (mostly writing papers in its word processing software and play Star Trek.) What struck me as interesting was that Apple’s box could not be upgraded or repaired by anybody other than Apple because of their proprietary stuff, while IBM’s PC not only could be repaired by the electronic equivalent of a shade-tree mechanic, but they went the way of the VHS and started to sell the licenses to anybody in the planet. The PC took over 95% of the personal computer market and has not relinquished ever since.
I was reading J. Kb.’s post where he mentions “Apple Warranty” and I was reminded a series of videos I bumped by accident in YouTube about an non-aligned Apple repair guy.My animus boycott for Apple was renewed for another 40 years after seeing them.
This is the first one I saw. he has several more. One of them mentions that he charged some basic repair for some simple thing about $75 which contrasts with the boatload pf cash that Apple demands.
Even if you are not electronics-savy, you will enjoy the workmanship and the explanations. Get you coffee and have at it.
And fuck Apple.
Miguel, I have to disagree with you about Apple. Having used macOS, Windows, and several flavors of Linux, I can tell you, hands down, Apple PCs and macOS is the superior combination, in reliability, ease of use, and most importantly, performance. I’ve used every version of Windows since v3.0. Nothing will change my opinion that’s it’s a colossal POS kludge. After Jobs came back and integrated UNIX-based NeXTStep into what became OS X, it was all over. The machines themselves are engineering marvels. I’ve had one catastrophic (hardware) failure in a Mac in thirteen years — a blown power supply — and too many to count on Windows. When you control none of the hardware, you can’t design the OS to work properly. Too many variables. Even the Surface Pros, made by Microsoft, are subject to random inexplicable failures. I know because I bricked one just by doing an OS update. I waited many years to be able to afford a Mac. I’ve never regretted my decision nor have I looked back. I own three of them. That’s testimony enough…
The principle is that Apple is a Bugatti Veyron while PC is a Pick Up truck. I like a Veyron (or Chyron now) but I am gonna commute more efficiently in my F-150 or S-100 or Ram. And that applies to 95% of the consumers.
You should watch the videos he posted. Lious go over all lots of the engineering screw ups Apple does and then refuses to acknowledge them. People who firmly believe Apple is the best are the same idiots who spend $1000 on a pair of ripped jeans and talk about the amazing quality and design aesthetics. Pure idiocy.
One additional comment. In fairness, I have to add that the only Windows OS I ever used that was reliable was NT 3.5 and it’s offspring, Windows 2000. It was a rock. Designed from the ground up, it was a first for the Redmond company. It’s kinda sad that an 18-year old OS is the only positive accomplishment I can fairly point out. Windows ME or Vista, anyone? Windows 8?
Desktops are a different story than laptops. any laptop, even windows based the motherboard is proprietary. I’m not defending apple, as I think some of their policies suck, but I will swear by my mac pro over any pc that I have had or built in the last 30+ years.
