My next Gun Project: 1964 Winchester Model 70 (Part 2)

(Back to part 1)

So, I figured why not go old school? Search for the original iron sight and shoot like that? I had the ad so I knew I needed a Lyman No. 77 front sight and a Lyman No. 48H receiver sight, how difficult could that be?

Stop laughing if you knew the sights haven’t been an option for decades. The original rear sight (with knobs) can be found under $200 but the front sight? Only one so far for $80 and only one insert.

Not to cry too much, Lyman seems/appears to have similar modern aluminum (instead of steel like the originals) for $99.99 and $69.99 respectively BUT… I am not sure if the will fit. I recently sent an inquiry to Lyman and I am waiting to hear from them.

And then a friend told me: “Don’t forget the scoping scope!” Aww shit! That is another lot of insane range of prices. And apparently, even if I go the scope way, a spotting scope is needed.

So, the options are:

– The USMC Sniper Rifle Scope at $575 & gunsmithing charges to be determined.

– Original Lyman No. 77 front sight and a Lyman No. 48H receiver sight about $300 with S&H.

– Modern  Lyman Receiver Sight 57WJS and Lyman Globe Front Target Sight 93 (still waiting for confirmation from Lyman) at a grand total of $180 including shipping.

I won’t deny I’d lust after the scope just because the cool factor at the range. As for the iron sights, I want to go with the 48H and the 77 because they belong with the gun as it was intended and keeping it historically correct is the right thing to do.

Then comes the spotting scope. The best value I saw out there is the Celestron 52257 Ultima 100 at $299 (Cheapest price found). If I remember correctly, Celestron has always been a kick ass brand for optics with the coolest telescopes.  Other scopes with the same or similar specs and in that price range are from brands that are kinda suspicious. I am a sucker for a sale, but cheap crap is still crap.

This one does not come with a tripod, but I am figuring a table top microphone stand is cheaper (under $20) and better than the aluminum things I have seen online.

Basically, the money I need to shoot somewhat accurately ranges from $500 to $900. Ouch.

It is gonna take a while. If you feel inclined with contributing to the effort you can use the PayPal link here or on the top right of this page. Any and all donations will be gratefully accepted.

Let’s make this old rifle bark again in freedom!

He will be silenced because Thoughtcrime will not be tolerated.

Alan Dershowitz is a Liberal with a mind like a bear trap. You just don’t pick a battle of wits against this guy unless you are very prepared.

And he is a lefty, a traditional one.  But he is infected with a malady that makes him unpalatable for many Pols on the Left: He is honorable.  He does not speak with a forked tongue just to be in the good graces of people and score political points.

I have no qualms about him not being a friend of the Conservative movement.  But at least I know he will come at you from the front.

He will soon disappear because the Left will despise him even more every day: He makes sense.

Media: Why you can’t respect them.

Because they do not respect themselves.

While trying to document the horrific event and the subsequent response from paramedics and police, a shirtless man demanded that she stop recording. When she disregarded him, the man punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground. “Stop the (expletive) recording!” the man could be heard shouting at Lorenz in the video as her phone clattered to the ground.
Lorenz was one of many journalists who found themselves in the line of danger during the clash between White nationalists and counter-protesters earlier this month. Saturday’s violence ultimately turned deadly when James Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, drove the Dodge Charger into a crowd, according to police.

Take the time to read the rest of the article. The author Brando Shulleeta compiles several other incidents including one I posted about. You will find something missing: The political identity of the attackers. Why? They all have been attributed to the Antifa/Left, the same side the journos prefer.

Hell, you have to admit that Mr. Shulleeta is crafty enough with the language by even try to make it appear it was the Other Side/Nazis rather than Antifa/Left. “The injury occurred while he was covering an anti-fascist march”  is the recurring theme without actually naming the attacking side.

Antifa knows they can get away (mostly) with attacking people recording events since either most do not reply, press charges or are even arrested by police. But I have the feeling they are going to target “certified” media now because it is cool to attack the big ones if they are not  only not blame them but place responsibility of the attack o the other side.

So, you cannot insult the media calling them whores when they act like they were just beaten by their pimps.

1964 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06

From what I had left of my Gun Fund, I was able to get this rifle for a price that it is embarrassingly cheap through a states sale by Denis Badurina’s shop Dragon Leatherworks, longtime friend of this blog.

From what I have gathered online, it seems I scored a Model 70 National Match and although I am not an expert on condition, it looks used, shot and cared for. Not a Safe Queen nor abused.

An astute and observant reader may have already find what is “wrong” with my rifle: No sights. Even though they came with the rifle out of the factory, for some reason they are not present.  Long short, inquires were made, but the original sights could not be found.

Of course, being an ignorant about bolt-action rifles and specially the Model 70 and specifically this particular subspecies, I thought that just tossing some rings and any scope would do the job. Boy was I wrong.  First, good or even average scope stuff is EXPENSIVE. From tools to the tube itself? It could be from triple to eight times what I paid for the rifle and I had already expended my funds to the point of leaving enough for a Happy Meal.

Then I realized that the top of the barrel is not quite your regular thin barrels in hunting rifles. It has blocks forward of the receiver and that looked vaguely familiar. I looked online and looky here what I found. US Marine Sniper Rifle with a scope.

That is a long scope! And now a effing classic which commands four to five figures in a Free Market if you can find it. “Fortunately” a replica is being made and sold in Midway USA: Leatherwood Hi-Lux William Malcolm USMC Sniper Rifle Scope.

I did say “fortunately” because at $575 plus whatever I need to pay a good gunsmith to mount it is way past what I have in my Gun Fund. Why not mount it myself and save some bucks that way? I heard Harry Callahan whisper in my ear “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

I was running out of options.
